I can finally afford a home with a down payment but don't know what to do with the current market. I feel I've missed the boat and waiting two to five years just makes me depressed. Advice?

Apparently a property I bid on sold for less than I offered, and they had a conventional loan (same as mine). I had a pre approval letter and excellent credit. What are potential reasons the seller chose the lower offer? I'm relatively new to real estate so apologies if this is a dumb question.
