  • How To Travel, Surf, And Be An Islander | Amber and Ryan from Hawaii | Real Life Diabetes Podcast 8
All in all, Amber and Ryan were pumped to cross paths on the island of Maui and share their traveling journeys to date. How do each of them deal with airport security? What do they eat in airports? Snacks? You know they both had snacks. At the time, Ryan had been on Maui for a month, mainly combing beaches and pretending to be a surfer. Amber focused on socializing in every happy hour across the island for two weeks. She breaks down the Hawaiian culture and cuisine, while he gives us insight into managing blood sugar while surfing.
    SHOW NOTES
Aloha. We hope you enjoy a few show notes and links from our adventure to Maui.
Amber’s first stop at the lovely Royal Lahaina Resort. She enjoyed her first few days in a resort setting before moving on to other parts of the island.

RipCurl – Ryan loves this brand more than most people.
We purchased a GoPro to document our ridiculous adventures. Watch out world – now you can watch the DDG on the big screen.

CVS – we need pharmacies in airports. We are planting the seed – MAKE IT HAPPEN.
Ryan’s Instagram photo documents the diabetes supplies he packed for his journey. Are you following the DDG on Instagram? All the cool kids are doing it.
Best Restaurant Ever in Makawao = Market Fresh Bistro. Everything is made fresh and grown in the area.
Tomato salad, kalmata  with goat cheese fritters.
Tofu and eggplant sandwich on freshly baked bread (Ryan’s newest addiction while in Hawaii). CLICK HERE to read his latest rant on this addiction.
Mana Foods in Paia. Damn good produce, tabouli, all things organic and is a great spot for people watching.
Charley’s Restaurant & Saloon in Paia – This is a must stop a badass happy hour and is the go-to pub for Willie Nelson and his family.
YUM- We enjoyed a Coconut Porter by the Maui Brewing Co. and a Longboard Ale by the Kona Brewing Co.
Bobo’s Oat Bars – Can always be found in Ryan’s backpack when traveling…should he remember to pack snacks.
Clif Bars – YUM. Clif Bars are a DDG staple.
Qdoba – One of Ryan’s go-to airport stops for food.
Fruitarian Diet – less fat and oils. Future Podcast coming soon. We would love to hear your thoughts so drop us a comment via the DDG SpeakPipe link or iTunes review. We dig hearing your voice.
Amber wanted to smell like a coconut so she purchased Hawaiian Tropic Sunscreen. Mission accomplished.
Ryan and Amber both ponied-up to the bar for a wonderful meal and experience at Fleetwood’s On Front Street. They accommodated Amber’s “particular” choices and Ryan’s vegan lifestyle.

  • Person First Language, Low-Carb Vs. High-Carb Diets, Skinny Pants Syndrome, and How Close Is The Closed Loop? | Kelly McKeever, RN and PWD | Real Life Diabetes Podcast 7
At the age of 13, did an event define your career path? For Kelly, it happened. A PWD–the importance of using this term instead of a diabetic was discussed, too–he now counsels patients with diabetes on a daily basis as part of a diabetes clinic. His real perspective for patients is invaluable. He relates to the ineffectiveness of the 15–wait–15 rule. He understands what it’s like to do something you regret when low or high. He’s been in that spot, where no matter how much insulin you dial up, your blood just won’t come down. He can empathize.

We discussed how he became a diabetes health professional, his top advice, his approach to patients, the importance of the diabetes online community, and the story behind how he received his diabetes diagnosis, from a football coach. Kelly joined the DDG team over in Amber’s living room, on a sweltering Oklahoma summer day.

***Let it also be noted, as Kelly explained, that he is currently in the process of earning his CDE credentials. Ryan blew that one in the intro. ***

  • A Journey Back To Playing Shows After Open Heart Surgery | Mike Hosty | Real Life Diabetes Podcast #6
This man has a story to tell and we jumped right into it. Mike Hosty is a musician by trade, playing 2-3 shows a week across the Southwest. His weekly Sunday institution at The Deli has entertained a couple of decades of students, leading to more than a few skipped Monday morning classes. We brought him on the podcast to hear about his health journey.
With a family history of a bicuspid heart valve where there should be a tricuspid aortic valve, Mike found out four years ago that he was at risk for some major complications–a cardiologist at a show he was playing diagnosed him with an echocardiogram right before a show. After an open-heart surgery resulting in a new cadaver valve, Mike has traveled the tough road back to playing gigs and being an active Dad. For anyone on the chronic disease path littered with adversity, Mike has plenty of words of wisdom to apply to the journey.
Kick back. Enjoy the show. Try to laugh.

  • Navigating Parenting Fears, College Lessons Learned, And The Power Of Friends | The Fightmasters | Real Life Diabetes Podcast #5
It’s one thing to be the person receiving a type 1 diabetes diagnosis. It’s yours. It’s pretty straight forward for you. Take shots, count carbs, and survive. To be on the other side of the glass, as the parents, is another challenge in itself. Parenting can set the foundation for a successful life of type 1 diabetes management. The Fightmasters have an endless collection of diabetes experience, including crazy low blood sugars, insulin mix-ups, little league sports, and sending a kid to college. Their perspective is one of autonomy, flexibility, forgiveness, and empowerment. We joked, debated, and even came close to shedding a tear, although it was right in the middle of Oklahoma’s allergy season.

    SHOW NOTES
We love these people and dished out various shoutouts during the podcast:
    – DiabetesMine.com
    – Rich Roll Podcast with Robin Arzon
You’ll want to run through the diabetic brick wall after hearing this podcast. Great conversation from a person recently diagnosed with T1D and not letting it slow her down in the slightest.
    – Scott Johnson from ScottsDiabetes.com
Here’s the list of miscellaneous stuff from this week’s talk:
    – The Official Signs and Symptoms of Diabetes
    – Everyone made fun of Ryan for his outlandish estimation of 10 million current type 1 diabetics and here’s the truth… JDRF estimates 3 million total people with a T1D diagnosis. Not too far off, I guess.
    – Amber talked about the weight challenges involved with her earlier years on NPH. This article tends to agree with her sentiment.
We promised to attach a few images:

  • Connecting Craft Beer and Blood Sugar | 405 Brewing Co. | Real Life Diabetes Podcast #4
We admire and respect what Trae Carson and Jonathan Stapleton are crafting over at 405 Brewing, Norman’s first microbrewery. As people with diabetes, we were curious about the brewing process, the carbs, and, well, the taste of their Spring Stout. On all fronts, they did not disappoint. We talked about why carbs aren’t on the outside of most beer bottles. They helped Ryan unravel the mysterious effects of different beers on his blood sugar. We dug up carbohydrate counts on Guinness, Bud Light, IPAs, stouts, and lagers. We even got into the science behind alcohol’s interaction with the liver and how it causes the eventual plummeting of blood sugar. For all of those folks who love good weather and a drink to go with that occasion, this podcast was for you. Enjoy.
