We ALL have a land of the shoulds and when our resources are low (meaning our coping is struggling) our mind just does a freaking fairy dance to that land. Remember your brain is designed to keep you safe NOT to keep you happy. It’s default is to keep you safe always and SO unless you are participating in CONSCIOUS thoughts (that you are choosing) and being mindful of your thoughts what your brain is doing is making sure you're not asleep on the job.
