Tem Blessed, Hip Hop Artist, and environmental justice activist is the author
of this stunning 252 page YA graphic novel. He wrote this story to inspire
the next generation of youth of color. For Tem Blessed, born Temistocles
Ferreira, representation matters. “As an African American born in west
Africa, I was called to write this book to create a world where a strong,
young black woman would be the hero and that other youth of color could
see themselves in the same heroic, positive light. This was a calling to
create a unique and inclusive literary experience that helps to inspire
diverse young readers to face whatever challenges come their way
in the real world.”
The book, which took 5 years to complete, was not without sacrifice and
challenges. “I wanted to keep writing songs but this story beckoned that it
be told,” Explained Mr. Blessed. “It felt like a spiritual experience and an
important tale that needed to be told during this exact time.” Tem Blessed
recalls how having to produce this book during the middle of a global
pandemic was challenging and sobering. “Both Mike and I have young
children and they were constantly hanging on us while we tried to home
school and reach our deadlines.” It didn’t help that in January of 2021 Tem
caught Covid-19. “Through the fever and fatigue, I saw what was truly a
priority. I remember thinking well I have good life insurance and if I die I’m
confident I created enough that it will still be able to see the light of day.”
Luckily Tem Blessed survived and now has released this visually striking
story, illustrated by Xeric Award-winning artist Mike LaRiccia, to the world.
