  • 82: College Admissions: Finding the Right Fit with David Hurwitt

Dave Hurwitt is an innovator. Over the course of his career, he’s led the development and launch of new products and services – from toothpicks to wind turbines – that have generated well over $1 billion in sales.

If you have a large, front loading washing machine in your house, that was Dave and his team at Whirlpool. They re-envisioned the traditional, small European washer for the US market and took front loaders from 1% of the market to over 50% today, saving billions of dollars in electricity and water consumption in the process.

Dave has lived and worked around the world, and is now based in Burlington Vermont with his wife and Golden Retriever, Bear. Their 3 “kids” have now graduated from college, but it was his experience with them on their college journeys that started his innovator’s brain cranking on what became Troove.

Having worked in admissions through grad school, he was amazed by how little technology and the internet had impacted the college search and admissions process. And even more, he was dismayed to discover how often students were transferring or dropping out altogether.

In early 2020, this led directly to his founding Troove, a 2-sided, AI powered platform to help students discover their passions, people, and place based on the real experiences of recent alumni and current higher education students.

Join us for this conversation about the college admissions system, why it’s underserving both students and colleges, and how Dave is working to change that by creating a system that helps students find their best fit.

    IN THIS EPISODE, WE DISCUSS:

    • The current college admissions system and how it underserves both students and colleges.
    • Dave’s experience with college admissions and how he developed a way to use technology to match colleges and students.
    • Why alumni are the key to helping students find their right fit for college.
    • The power dynamic between applicants and colleges.
    • Why students should focus more on getting out rather than getting in.
    • How Troove helps students who come from a lower socioeconomic background.
    • Helping students find majors/careers that align with their interests.
    • Social GPAs and how we can use them.

For over a decade, he ran a large annual ed-tech unconference called Hack Education (previously EduBloggerCon). He blogs, speaks, and consults on education and technology, and his virtual and physical events and online communities have over 150,000 members.

Steve also has the skin disorder Vitiligo and created the world's largest social network for those with Vitiligo at VitiligoFriends.org.

MORE ABOUT THE REBEL EDUCATOR PODCAST:

In each episode of the Rebel Educator podcast, I deconstruct world-class educators, students, and thought leaders in education to extract the tactics, tools, and routines that you can use as teachers and parents. Join me as we discuss how to shift the classroom, the learning environment, the mindset, and the pedagogy, to resist tradition, reignite wonder, and re-imagine the future of education.

This podcast is dedicated to all of the educators who work thankless hours to make our next generation the best it can be.  It was designed to begin conversations on how we can redesign education for the future of work and the success of our students.  It is meant for teachers, students, administrators, homeschoolers and anyone who interacts with and teaches youth.

  • 73: 21st Century Education with Yvette Larsson

Yvette Larsson, an international Swede, is passionate about learning and innovation so that we can create  a better world together. She uses applied neuroscience, focusing on our human potential and the question: What does it mean to be human in a global age of technology?

Her personal story starts 100 kilometers above the Arctic Circle, where she grew up with a lot of freedom and adventure to roam the mountains and the forests of Swedish Lapland. She admits that she was often bored. In hindsight, she has realized that she developed her sense of creativity and entrepreneurial mindset from growing up in a UNESCO protected area with omnipresent nature as her playground. She became an avid reader,  traveled in her imagination, explored ideas, and still does.

Join us for this conversation about 21st century education, what students want, and what we can do to create a more modern education for learners.

    IN THIS EPISODE, WE DISCUSS:

    • What does it mean to be a human in the global age of technology.
    • How to balance in-person and digital connection and communication.
    • What is a hackathon and how it’s redesigning education for “glocal” communities.
    • The key message youth want adults to know and how we can best support their need.
    • How Yvette collaborated with others to create a successful well-being program at her school.
    • Yvette’s journey with co-founding AHA to develop learning experiences for the 21st century.
