사사기 (Judges) 17:6-13 [새번역/ESV]

6 그 때에는 이스라엘에 왕이 없었으므로, 사람들은 저마다 자기의 뜻에 맞는 대로 하였다.

In those days there was no king in Israel. Everyone did what was right in his own eyes.

7 유다 지파에 속한 유다 땅 베들레헴에 한 젊은이가 있었는데, 그는 레위 사람으로서 그 곳에서 잠시 살고 있었다.

Now there was a young man of Bethlehem in Judah, of the family of Judah, who was a Levite, and he sojourned there.

8 그 사람이 자기가 살던 유다 땅 베들레헴을 떠나서 있을 곳을 찾다가, 에브라임 산간지방까지 와서, 미가의 집에 이르렀다.

And the man departed from the town of Bethlehem in Judah to sojourn where he could find a place. And as he journeyed, he came to the hill country of Ephraim to the house of Micah.

9 미가가 그에게 물었다. "젊은이는 어디서 오시는 길이오?" 그가 대답하였다. "나는 유다 땅 베들레헴에 사는 레위 사람인데, 있을 곳을 찾아다니고 있습니다."

And Micah said to him, “Where do you come from?” And he said to him, “I am a Levite of Bethlehem in Judah, and I am going to sojourn where I may find a place.”

10 미가가 그에게 말하였다. "우리 집에 살면서, 어른이 되어 주시고, 제사장이 되어 주십시오. 일 년에 은돈 열 냥을 드리고, 옷과 먹거리를 드리겠습니다." 이 말을 듣고 그 젊은 레위 사람은 안으로 들어갔다.

And Micah said to him, “Stay with me, and be to me a father and a priest, and I will give you ten pieces of silver a year and a suit of clothes and your living.” And the Levite went in.

11 그 젊은 레위 사람은 미가와 함께 살기로 하고, 미가의 친아들 가운데 하나처럼 되었다.

And the Levite was content to dwell with the man, and the young man became to him like one of his sons.

12 미가가 그 레위 사람을 거룩하게 구별하여 세우니, 그 젊은이는 미가 집안의 제사장이 되어, 그의 집에서 살았다.

And Micah ordained the Levite, and the young man became his priest, and was in the house of Micah.

13 그래서 미가는, 자기가 이제 레위 사람을 제사장으로 삼았으니, 주님께서 틀림없이 자기에게 복을 주실 것이라고 생각하였다.

Then Micah said, “Now I know that the Lord will prosper me, because I have a Levite as priest.”

8 보아스가 룻에게 말하였다. "여보시오, 새댁, 내가 하는 말을 잘 들으시오. 이삭을 주우려고 다른 밭으로 가지 마시오. 여기를 떠나지 말고, 우리 밭에서 일하는 여자들을 바싹 따라다니도록 하시오.

Then Boaz said to Ruth, “Now, listen, my daughter, do not go to glean in another field or leave this one, but keep close to my young women.

9 우리 일꾼들이 곡식을 거두는 밭에서 눈길을 돌리지 말고, 여자들의 뒤를 따라다니면서 이삭을 줍도록 하시오. 젊은 남자 일꾼들에게는 댁을 건드리지 말라고 단단히 일러두겠소. 목이 마르거든 주저하지 말고 물단지에 가서, 젊은 남자 일꾼들이 길어다가 둔 물을 마시도록 하시오."

Let your eyes be on the field that they are reaping, and go after them. Have I not charged the young men not to touch you? And when you are thirsty, go to the vessels and drink what the young men have drawn.”

10 그러자 룻은 엎드려 이마를 땅에 대고 절을 하면서, 보아스에게 말하였다. "저는 한낱 이방 여자일 뿐인데, 어찌하여 저같은 것을 이렇게까지 잘 보살피시고 생각하여 주십니까?"

Then she fell on her face, bowing to the ground, and said to him, “Why have I found favor in your eyes, that you should take notice of me, since I am a foreigner?”

11 보아스가 룻에게 대답하였다. "남편을 잃은 뒤에 댁이 시어머니에게 어떻게 하였는지를, 자세히 들어서 다 알고 있소. 댁은 친정 아버지와 어머니를 떠나고, 태어난 땅을 떠나서, 엊그제까지만 해도 알지 못하던 다른 백성에게로 오지 않았소?

But Boaz answered her, “All that you have done for your mother-in-law since the death of your husband has been fully told to me, and how you left your father and mother and your native land and came to a people that you did not know before.

12 댁이 한 일은 주님께서 갚아 주실 것이오. 이제 댁이 주 이스라엘의 하나님의 날개 밑으로 보호를 받으러 왔으니, 그분께서 댁에게 넉넉히 갚아 주실 것이오."

The Lord repay you for what you have done, and a full reward be given you by the Lord, the God of Israel, under whose wings you have come to take refuge!”

13 룻이 대답하였다. "어른께서 이토록 잘 보살펴 주시니, 몸둘 바를 모르겠습니다. 어른께서 거느리고 계신 여종들 축에도 끼지 못할 이 종을 이처럼 위로하여 주시니, 보잘것없는 이 몸이 큰 용기를 얻습니다."

Then she said, “I have found favor in your eyes, my lord, for you have comforted me and spoken kindly to your servant, though I am not one of your servants.”

여호수아 (Joshua) 24:13-15 [새번역/ESV]

13 너희가 일구지 아니한 땅과 너희가 세우지 아니한 성읍을 내가 너희에게 주어서, 너희가 그 안에서 살고 있다. 너희는 너희가 심지도 아니한 포도밭과 올리브 밭에서 열매를 따먹고 있는 것이다.'

I gave you a land on which you had not labored and cities that you had not built, and you dwell in them. You eat the fruit of vineyards and olive orchards that you did not plant.’

14 이렇게 말씀하셨으니, 당신들은 이제 주님을 경외하면서, 그를 성실하고 진실하게 섬기십시오. 그리고 여러분은 여러분의 조상이 강 저쪽의 메소포타미아와 이집트에서 섬기던 신들을 버리고, 오직 주님만 섬기십시오.

“Now therefore fear the Lord and serve him in sincerity and in faithfulness. Put away the gods that your fathers served beyond the River and in Egypt, and serve the Lord.

15 주님을 섬기고 싶지 않거든, 조상들이 강 저쪽의 메소포타미아에서 섬기던 신들이든지, 아니면 당신들이 살고 있는 땅 아모리 사람들의 신들이든지, 당신들이 어떤 신들을 섬길 것인지를 오늘 선택하십시오. 나와 나의 집안은 주님을 섬길 것입니다."

And if it is evil in your eyes to serve the Lord, choose this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your fathers served in the region beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.”

사사기 (Judges) 2:16-19 [새번역/ESV]

16 그 뒤에 주님께서는 사사들을 일으키셔서, 그들을 약탈자의 손에서 구하여 주셨다.

Then the Lord raised up judges, who saved them out of the hand of those who plundered them.

17 그러나 그들은 사사들의 말도 듣지 않고, 오히려 음란하게 다른 신들을 섬기며 경배하였다. 그들은 자기 조상이 주님의 명령에 순종하며 걸어온 길에서 빠르게 떠나갔다. 그들은 조상처럼 살지 않았다.

Yet they did not listen to their judges, for they whored after other gods and bowed down to them. They soon turned aside from the way in which their fathers had walked, who had obeyed the commandments of the Lord, and they did not do so.

18 그러나 주님께서는 그들을 돌보시려고 사사를 세우실 때마다 그 사사와 함께 계셔서, 그 사사가 살아 있는 동안에는 그들을 원수들의 손에서 구하여 주셨다. 주님께서, 원수들에게 억눌려 괴로움을 당하는 그들의 신음소리를 들으시고, 그들을 불쌍히 여기셨기 때문이다.

Whenever the Lord raised up judges for them, the Lord was with the judge, and he saved them from the hand of their enemies all the days of the judge. For the Lord was moved to pity by their groaning because of those who afflicted and oppressed them.

19 그러나 사사가 죽으면 백성은 다시 돌아서서, 그들의 조상보다 더 타락하여, 다른 신들을 따르고 섬기며, 그들에게 경배하였다. 그들은 악한 행위와 완악한 행실을 버리지 않았다.

But whenever the judge died, they turned back and were more corrupt than their fathers, going after other gods, serving them and bowing down to them. They did not drop any of their practices or their stubborn ways.

1 주님의 종 모세가 죽은 뒤에, 주님께서, 모세를 보좌하던 눈의 아들 여호수아에게 말씀하셨다.

After the death of Moses the servant of the Lord, the Lord said to Joshua the son of Nun, Moses' assistant,

2 "나의 종 모세가 죽었으니, 이제 너는 이스라엘 자손 곧 모든 백성과 함께 일어나, 요단 강을 건너서, 내가 그들에게 주는 땅으로 가거라.

“Moses my servant is dead. Now therefore arise, go over this Jordan, you and all this people, into the land that I am giving to them, to the people of Israel.

3 내가 모세에게 말한 대로, 너희 발바닥이 닿는 곳은 어디든지 내가 너희에게 주겠다.

Every place that the sole of your foot will tread upon I have given to you, just as I promised to Moses.

4 광야에서부터 레바논까지, 큰 강인 유프라테스 강에서부터 헷 사람의 땅을 지나 서쪽의 지중해까지, 모두 너희의 영토가 될 것이다.

From the wilderness and this Lebanon as far as the great river, the river Euphrates, all the land of the Hittites to the Great Sea toward the going down of the sun shall be your territory.

5 네가 사는 날 동안 아무도 너의 앞길을 가로막지 못할 것이다. 내가 모세와 함께 하였던 것과 같이 너와 함께 하며, 너를 떠나지 아니하며, 버리지 아니하겠다.

No man shall be able to stand before you all the days of your life. Just as I was with Moses, so I will be with you. I will not leave you or forsake you.

6 굳세고 용감하여라. 내가 이 백성의 조상에게 주기로 맹세한 땅을, 이 백성에게 유산으로 물려줄 사람이 바로 너다.

Be strong and courageous, for you shall cause this people to inherit the land that I swore to their fathers to give them.

7 오직 너는 크게 용기를 내어, 나의 종 모세가 너에게 지시한 모든 율법을 다 지키고, 오른쪽으로나 왼쪽으로 치우치지 않도록 하여라. 그러면 네가 어디를 가든지 성공할 것이다.

Only be strong and very courageous, being careful to do according to all the law that Moses my servant commanded you. Do not turn from it to the right hand or to the left, that you may have good success wherever you go.

8 이 율법책의 말씀을 늘 읽고 밤낮으로 그것을 공부하여, 이 율법책에 씌어진 대로, 모든 것을 성심껏 실천하여라. 그리하면 네가 가는 길이 순조로울 것이며, 네가 성공할 것이다.

This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.

9 내가 너에게 굳세고 용감하라고 명하지 않았느냐! 너는 두려워하거나 낙담하지 말아라. 네가 어디로 가든지, 너의 주, 나 하나님이 함께 있겠다."

Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”

4 그들은 에돔 땅을 돌아서 가려고, 호르 산에서부터 홍해 길을 따라 나아갔다. 길을 걷는 동안에 백성들은 마음이 몹시 조급하였다.

From Mount Hor they set out by the way to the Red Sea, to go around the land of Edom. And the people became impatient on the way.

5 그래서 백성들은 하나님과 모세를 원망하였다. "어찌하여 우리를 이집트에서 데리고 나왔습니까? 이 광야에서 우리를 죽이려고 합니까? 먹을 것도 없습니다. 마실 것도 없습니다. 이 보잘것없는 음식은 이제 진저리가 납니다."

And the people spoke against God and against Moses, “Why have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? For there is no food and no water, and we loathe this worthless food.”

6 그러자 주님께서 백성들에게 불뱀을 보내셨다. 그것들이 사람을 무니, 이스라엘 백성이 많이 죽었다.

Then the Lord sent fiery serpents among the people, and they bit the people, so that many people of Israel died.

7 백성이 모세에게 와서 간구하였다. "주님과 어른을 원망함으로써 우리가 죄를 지었습니다. 이 뱀이 우리에게서 물러가게 해 달라고 주님께 기도하여 주시기 바랍니다." 그리하여 모세가 백성들을 살려 달라고 기도하였다.

And the people came to Moses and said, “We have sinned, for we have spoken against the Lord and against you. Pray to the Lord, that he take away the serpents from us.” So Moses prayed for the people.

8 주님께서 모세에게 말씀하셨다. "너는 불뱀을 만들어 기둥 위에 달아 놓아라. 물린 사람은 누구든지 그것을 보면 살 것이다."

And the Lord said to Moses, “Make a fiery serpent and set it on a pole, and everyone who is bitten, when he sees it, shall live.”

9 그리하여 모세는 구리로 뱀을 만들어서 그것을 기둥 위에 달아 놓았다. 뱀이 사람을 물었을 때에, 물린 사람은 구리로 만든 그 뱀을 쳐다보면 살아났다.

So Moses made a bronze serpent and set it on a pole. And if a serpent bit anyone, he would look at the bronze serpent and live.

15 성막을 세우던 날, 구름이 성막, 곧 증거궤가 보관된 성막을 덮었다. 저녁에는 성막 위의 구름이 불처럼 보였으며, 아침까지 그렇게 계속되었다.

On the day that the tabernacle was set up, the cloud covered the tabernacle, the tent of the testimony. And at evening it was over the tabernacle like the appearance of fire until morning.

16 그것은 늘 그러하였다. 구름이 성막을 덮고 있었으며, 밤에는 그 구름이 불처럼 보였다.

So it was always: the cloud covered it by day and the appearance of fire by night.

17 구름이 성막 위로 걷혀 올라갈 때면, 이스라엘 자손은 그것을 보고 난 다음에 길을 떠났고, 구름이 내려와 머물면, 이스라엘 자손은 바로 그 자리에 진을 쳤다.

And whenever the cloud lifted from over the tent, after that the people of Israel set out, and in the place where the cloud settled down, there the people of Israel camped.

18 이스라엘 자손은 이렇게 주님의 지시에 따라 길을 떠났고, 또한 주님의 지시에 따라 진을 쳤다. 구름이 성막 위에 머물러 있는 날 동안에는, 진에 머물렀다.

At the command of the Lord the people of Israel set out, and at the command of the Lord they camped. As long as the cloud rested over the tabernacle, they remained in camp.

19 그 구름이 성막 위에 여러 날 동안 오래 머물면, 이스라엘 자손은 주님의 명을 지켜 길을 떠나지 않았다.

Even when the cloud continued over the tabernacle many days, the people of Israel kept the charge of the Lord and did not set out.

20 구름이 성막 위에 며칠만 머무를 때도 있었다. 그 때에는 그 때대로 주님의 지시에 따라서 진을 치고, 또 주님의 지시에 따라 길을 떠나곤 하였다.

Sometimes the cloud was a few days over the tabernacle, and according to the command of the Lord they remained in camp; then according to the command of the Lord they set out.

21 구름이 저녁부터 아침까지만 머물러 있을 때도 있었다. 그럴 때에는 아침이 되어 구름이 걷혀 올라가면, 그들은 길을 떠났다. 낮이든지 밤이든지 구름만 걷혀 올라가면, 그들은 길을 떠났다.

And sometimes the cloud remained from evening until morning. And when the cloud lifted in the morning, they set out, or if it continued for a day and a night, when the cloud lifted they set out.

22 때로는 이틀이나 한 달이나 또는 몇 달씩 계속하여 구름이 성막 위에 머물러 있으면, 이스라엘 자손은 그 곳에 진을 친 채 길을 떠나지 않았다. 그들은 구름이 걷혀 올라가야만 길을 떠났다.

Whether it was two days, or a month, or a longer time, that the cloud continued over the tabernacle, abiding there, the people of Israel remained in camp and did not set out, but when it lifted they set out.

23 이렇게 그들은 주님의 지시에 따라 진을 쳤고, 주님의 지시에 따라 길을 떠났다. 그들은, 주님께서 모세를 시켜 분부하신 대로, 주님의 명령을 지켰다.

At the command of the Lord they camped, and at the command of the Lord they set out. They kept the charge of the Lord, at the command of the Lord by Moses.

민수기 (Numbers) 14:5-9 [새번역/ESV]

5 모세와 아론은 이스라엘 자손의 온 회중 앞에서 얼굴을 땅에 대고 엎드렸다.

Then Moses and Aaron fell on their faces before all the assembly of the congregation of the people of Israel.

6 그러자 그 땅을 탐지하고 돌아온 이들 가운데서, 눈의 아들 여호수아와 여분네의 아들 갈렙이 슬픔에 겨워 자신들의 옷을 찢으며,

And Joshua the son of Nun and Caleb the son of Jephunneh, who were among those who had spied out the land, tore their clothes

7 이스라엘 자손 온 회중에게 말하였다. "우리가 탐지하려고 두루 다녀 본 그 땅은 매우 좋은 땅입니다.

and said to all the congregation of the people of Israel, “The land, which we passed through to spy it out, is an exceedingly good land.

8 주님께서 우리를 사랑하신다면, 그 땅으로 우리를 인도하실 것입니다. 젖과 꿀이 흐르는 그 땅을 우리에게 주실 것입니다.

If the Lord delights in us, he will bring us into this land and give it to us, a land that flows with milk and honey.

9 다만 여러분은 주님을 거역하지만 마십시오. 여러분은 그 땅 백성을 두려워하지 마십시오. 그들은 우리의 밥입니다. 그들의 방어력은 사라졌습니다. 주님께서 우리와 함께 계시니, 그들을 두려워하지 마십시오."

Only do not rebel against the Lord. And do not fear the people of the land, for they are bread for us. Their protection is removed from them, and the Lord is with us; do not fear them.”

출애굽기 (Exodus) 14:10-14 [새번역/ESV]

10 바로가 다가오고 있었다. 이스라엘 자손이 고개를 들고 보니, 이집트 사람들이 그들을 추격하여 오고 있었다. 이스라엘 자손은 크게 두려워하며, 주님께 부르짖었다.

When Pharaoh drew near, the people of Israel lifted up their eyes, and behold, the Egyptians were marching after them, and they feared greatly. And the people of Israel cried out to the Lord.

11 그들은 모세를 원망하며 말하였다. "이집트에는 묘 자리가 없어서, 우리를 이 광야에다 끌어내어 죽이려는 것입니까? 우리를 이집트에서 끌어내어, 여기서 이런 일을 당하게 하다니, 왜 우리를 이렇게 만드십니까?

They said to Moses, “Is it because there are no graves in Egypt that you have taken us away to die in the wilderness? What have you done to us in bringing us out of Egypt?

12 이집트에 있을 때에, 우리가 이미 당신에게 말하지 않았습니까? 광야에 나가서 죽는 것보다 이집트 사람을 섬기는 것이 더 나으니, 우리가 이집트 사람을 섬기게 그대로 내버려 두라고 하지 않았습니까?"

Is not this what we said to you in Egypt: ‘Leave us alone that we may serve the Egyptians’? For it would have been better for us to serve the Egyptians than to die in the wilderness.”

13 모세가 백성에게 대답하였다. "두려워하지 마십시오. 당신들은 가만히 서서, 주님께서 오늘 당신들을 어떻게 구원하시는지 지켜 보기만 하십시오. 당신들이 오늘 보는 이 이집트 사람을 다시는 볼 수 없을 것입니다.

And Moses said to the people, “Fear not, stand firm, and see the salvation of the Lord, which he will work for you today. For the Egyptians whom you see today, you shall never see again.

14 주님께서 당신들을 구하여 주시려고 싸우실 것이니, 당신들은 진정하십시오."

The Lord will fight for you, and you have only to be silent.”

출애굽기 (Exodus) 19:16-20 [새번역/ESV]

16 마침내 셋째 날 아침이 되었다. 번개가 치고, 천둥소리가 나며, 짙은 구름이 산을 덮은 가운데, 산양 뿔나팔 소리가 우렁차게 울려퍼지자, 진에 있는 모든 백성이 두려워서 떨었다.

On the morning of the third day there were thunders and lightnings and a thick cloud on the mountain and a very loud trumpet blast, so that all the people in the camp trembled.

17 모세는 백성이 하나님을 만날 수 있도록 진으로부터 그들을 데리고 나와서, 산기슭에 세웠다.

Then Moses brought the people out of the camp to meet God, and they took their stand at the foot of the mountain.

18 그 때에 시내 산에는, 주님께서 불 가운데서 그 곳으로 내려오셨으므로 온통 연기가 자욱했는데, 마치 가마에서 나오는 것처럼 연기가 솟아오르고, 온 산이 크게 진동하였다.

Now Mount Sinai was wrapped in smoke because the Lord had descended on it in fire. The smoke of it went up like the smoke of a kiln, and the whole mountain trembled greatly.

19 나팔 소리가 점점 더 크게 울려퍼지는 가운데, 모세가 하나님께 말씀을 아뢰니, 하나님이 음성으로 그에게 대답하셨다.

And as the sound of the trumpet grew louder and louder, Moses spoke, and God answered him in thunder.

20 주님께서 시내 산 곧 그 산 꼭대기로 내려오셔서, 모세를 그 산 꼭대기로 부르시니, 모세가 올라갔다.

The Lord came down on Mount Sinai

출애굽기 (Exodus) 40:34-35 [새번역/ESV]

34 그 때에 구름이 회막을 덮고, 주님의 영광이 성막에 가득 찼다.

Then the cloud covered the tent of meeting, and the glory of the Lord filled the tabernacle.

35 모세는, 회막에 구름이 머물고, 주님의 영광이 성막에 가득 찼으므로, 거기에 들어갈 수 없었다.

And Moses was not able to enter the tent of meeting because the cloud settled on it, and the glory of the Lord filled the tabernacle.

15 요셉의 형제들은 아버지를 여의고 나서, 요셉이 자기들을 미워하여, 그들에게서 당한 온갖 억울함을 앙갚음하면 어찌하나 하는 생각이 들어서,

When Joseph's brothers saw that their father was dead, they said, “It may be that Joseph will hate us and pay us back for all the evil that we did to him.”

16 요셉에게 전갈을 보냈다. "아버지께서 돌아가시기 전에 남기신 유언이 있습니다.

So they sent a message to Joseph, saying, “Your father gave this command before he died:

17 아우님에게 전하라고 하시면서 '너의 형들이 너에게 몹쓸 일을 저질렀지만, 이제 이 아버지는 네가 형들의 허물과 죄를 용서하여 주기를 바란다' 하셨습니다. 그러니 아우님은, 우리 아버지께서 섬기신 그 하나님의 종들인 우리가 지은 죄를 용서하여 주시기 바랍니다." 요셉은 이 말을 전해 듣고서 울었다.

‘Say to Joseph, “Please forgive the transgression of your brothers and their sin, because they did evil to you.”’ And now, please forgive the transgression of the servants of the God of your father.” Joseph wept when they spoke to him.

18 곧 이어서 요셉의 형들이 직접 와서, 요셉 앞에 엎드려서 말하였다. "우리는 아우님의 종입니다."

His brothers also came and fell down before him and said, “Behold, we are your servants.”

19 요셉이 그들에게 말하였다. "두려워하지 마십시오. 내가 하나님을 대신하기라도 하겠습니까?

But Joseph said to them, “Do not fear, for am I in the place of God?

20 형님들은 나를 해치려고 하였지만, 하나님은 오히려 그것을 선하게 바꾸셔서, 오늘과 같이 수많은 사람의 생명을 구원하셨습니다.

As for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good, to bring it about that many people should be kept alive, as they are today.

21 그러니 형님들은 두려워하지 마십시오. 내가 형님들을 모시고, 형님들의 자식들을 돌보겠습니다." 이렇게 요셉은 그들을 간곡한 말로 위로하였다.

So do not fear; I will provide for you and your little ones.” Thus he comforted them and spoke kindly to them.

창세기 (Genesis) 22:11-14; 28:10-17 [새번역/ESV]

11 그 때에 주님의 천사가 하늘에서 "아브라함아, 아브라함아!" 하고 그를 불렀다. 아브라함이 대답하였다. "예, 여기 있습니다."

But the angel of the Lord called to him from heaven and said, “Abraham, Abraham!” And he said, “Here I am.”

12 천사가 말하였다. "그 아이에게 손을 대지 말아라! 그 아이에게 아무 일도 하지 말아라! 네가 너의 아들, 너의 외아들까지도 나에게 아끼지 아니하니, 네가 하나님 두려워하는 줄을 내가 이제 알았다."

He said, “Do not lay your hand on the boy or do anything to him, for now I know that you fear God, seeing you have not withheld your son, your only son, from me.”

13 아브라함이 고개를 들고 살펴보니, 수풀 속에 숫양 한 마리가 있는데, 그 뿔이 수풀에 걸려 있었다. 가서 그 숫양을 잡아다가, 아들 대신에 그것으로 번제를 드렸다.

And Abraham lifted up his eyes and looked, and behold, behind him was a ram, caught in a thicket by his horns. And Abraham went and took the ram and offered it up as a burnt offering instead of his son.

14 이런 일이 있었으므로, 아브라함이 그 곳 이름을 여호와이레라고 하였다. 오늘날까지도 사람들은 '주님의 산에서 준비될 것이다'는 말을 한다.

So Abraham called the name of that place, “The Lord will provide”; as it is said to this day, “On the mount of the Lord it shall be provided.”

10 야곱이 브엘세바를 떠나서, 하란으로 가다가,

Jacob left Beersheba and went toward Haran.

11 어떤 곳에 이르렀을 때에, 해가 저물었으므로, 거기에서 하룻밤을 지내게 되었다. 그는 돌 하나를 주워서 베개로 삼고, 거기에 누워서 자다가,

And he came to a certain place and stayed there that night, because the sun had set. Taking one of the stones of the place, he put it under his head and lay down in that place to sleep.

12 꿈을 꾸었다. 그가 보니, 땅에 층계가 있고, 그 꼭대기가 하늘에 닿아 있고, 하나님의 천사들이 그 층계를 오르락내리락 하고 있었다.

And he dreamed, and behold, there was a ladder set up on the earth, and the top of it reached to heaven. And behold, the angels of God were ascending and descending on it!

13 주님께서 그 층계 위에 서서 말씀하셨다. "나는 주, 너의 할아버지 아브라함을 보살펴 준 하나님이요, 너의 아버지 이삭을 보살펴 준 하나님이다. 네가 지금 누워 있는 이 땅을, 내가 너와 너의 자손에게 주겠다.

And behold, the Lord stood above it and said, “I am the Lord, the God of Abraham your father and the God of Isaac. The land on which you lie I will give to you and to your offspring.

14 너의 자손이 땅의 티끌처럼 많아질 것이며, 동서 남북 사방으로 퍼질 것이다. 이 땅 위의 모든 백성이 너와 너의 자손 덕에 복을 받게 될 것이다.

Your offspring shall be like the dust of the earth, and you shall spread abroad to the west and to the east and to the north and to the south, and in you and your offspring shall all the families of the earth be blessed.

15 내가 너와 함께 있어서, 네가 어디로 가든지 너를 지켜 주며, 내가 너를 다시 이 땅으로 데려 오겠다. 내가 너에게 약속한 것을 다 이루기까지, 내가 너를 떠나지 않겠다."

Behold, I am with you and will keep you wherever you go, and will bring you back to this land. For I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you.”

16 야곱은 잠에서 깨어서, 혼자 생각하였다. '주님께서 분명히 이 곳에 계시는데도, 내가 미처 그것을 몰랐구나.'

Then Jacob awoke from his sleep and said, “Surely the Lord is in this place, and I did not know it.”

17 그는 두려워하면서 중얼거렸다. "이 얼마나 두려운 곳인가! 이 곳은 다름아닌 하나님의 집이다. 여기가 바로 하늘로 들어가는 문이다."

And he was afraid and said, “How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven.”
