Recapping California’s State Budget
After months of negotiations and compromises, Governor Gavin Newsom has signed a state budget into law, closing a $12 billion deficit. The budget borrows heavily from state reserves and includes spending cuts — including to a Medi-Cal expansion for some immigrants without legal status. It also includes a significant environmental change aimed at boosting housing production in California as lawmakers try to address the affordability crisis. The CapRadio Politics and Statehouse Reporter Laura Fitzgerald joins Insight with more on how the state closed its deficit, and what the changes to the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) could mean for housing.

Menopause Research and Policy
Menopause affects half the population, but has long been considered a taboo topic of discussion. And despite women’s health gaining increasing attention, the lack of menopause research continues to create barriers to accessing treatment. Now, new state legislation aims to close that information gap, and make treatment more affordable and accessible. CapRadio Reporter Megan Myscofski returns with more of her reporting on the lack of menopause research.

This story is part of a series produced for the USC Annenberg Center for Health Journalism’s 2025 California Health Equity Fellowship.
