The Detroit Red Wings have hired Derek LaLonde to be the new Head Coach. LaLonde comes into the Detroit Red Wings organization with a long resume. Along with his long resume, LaLonde has won two Stanley Cups with the Tampa Bay Lightning and Jon Cooper in the 2020 and 2021 seasons.

LaLonde began his coaching career at Ferris State University, where he took over for Jeff Blashill. After a stop at the University of Denver, LaLonde was given a chance to be a head coach of the Green Bay Gamblers, where they took home a league championship.

Derek LaLonde then moved to the Toledo Walleye, where he took the franchise from worst to first in one season, which earned him a chance to lead the Iowa Wild for 2 seasons in the AHL as head coach. Then Steve Yzerman brought in LaLonde to be an assistant coach on Jon Cooper’s staff for the Tampa Bay Lightning, where they won two straight Stanley Cups.

Now, the new Red Wings head coach, LaLonde will jump right into NHL Draft duty, with the Red Wings drafting 8th overall on July 8th. Then, LaLonde will take over Larkin, Seider, and Lucas Raymond as they continue to build and grow into a strong playoff contender.
