A group of Israeli activists from the Standing Together movement held a sit-in outside the headquarters of the Religious Zionist party headed by far-right Israeli finance minister Bezalel Smotrich, who is behind a government push to expand illegal settlements in the occupied West Bank.

Painted in red to represent the blood of Palestinians being terrorised and killed by settlers in the West Bank, the activists chanted slogans accusing Smotrich and his party of funding settler terrorism in occupied Palestine.

Eve Geddie, Director of Amnesty International’s Brussels Office, calls on the European Union to suspend the EU-Israel Association Agreement, arguing that continued inaction is “increasingly looking like complicity.”

She says the agreement grants Israel privileged access to EU markets while requiring respect for human rights, and maintains that “if conditions for such preferential treatment are not met, then preferential treatment must be revoked.”

Speaking at the 2026 UN Palestine Committee engagement with European Civil Society Organizations in Brussels on 6 May 2026, Ms. Geddie argues that suspending trade benefits is “one of the most powerful ways” for the EU to exert “immediate and meaningful pressure.”

She urges European leaders to choose between continuing “Israel’s red carpet treatment” and “enforcing EU’s red lines,” adding that individual member states must act independently if the EU cannot reach a collective decision.
