I. WHO IS THE HOLY SPIRIT?
A . He is God, the third person of the trinity (Matt. 28:19; II Cor. 13:14)
B . The Holy Spirit is a person with all the qualities of God, not an impersonal force (Jn. 16:13).
II. WHY DID THE HOLY SPIRIT COME?
A . To enable us to know Christ (J. 3:5-7).
B . To glorify Christ (Jn. 16:14).
C . To lead us into all truth (Jn. 16:13).
D. To produce His fruit and gifts in our lives (Gal. 5:22-23; I Cor. 12:7).
E. To empower us to be witnesses for Christ (Acts 1:8).
III. WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE FILLED WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT?
The word “FILLED” means to be empowered and directed by the Holy Spirit.
A . To be filled with and to abide/remain in Christ (Jn. 15:5).
B . To experience the abundant and overflowing life (Jn. 10:10b; Jn. 7:37-39).
C . To grow, develop, and mature in Christ (Col. 3:16).
D. To introduce other to Christ (Acts 1:8).
IV. WHAT ARE SOME HINDRANCES TO BEING FILLED WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT?
A . Lack of knowledge (Rm. 7:15,24).
B . Lack of faith (Heb. 11:6).
V. HOW CAN WE BE FILLED WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT?
A . We are filled with the Holy Spirit by faith (Eph. 2:8-9; Col. 2:6).
B . Preparing our hearts to be filled by:
1. Desiring to live a righteous and holy life (Matt. 5:6)
2. Surrendering your life to Christ (Rm. 12:1,2).
3. Confessing known sin in our lives (I Jn. 1:9).
C. Our authority is the word of God. Appropriate the filling of the Holy Spirit by faith.
1. God’s command: (Eph. 5:18).
2. God’s promise: (I Jn. 5:14-15).
3. Ask to be filled with the Holy Spirit (Lk. 11:9-13).
