Christ gives a parable to his disciples to imitate the shrewdness of the dishonest (unrighteous) manager. What do we do with it? Why does Jesus tell his disciples to use unrighteous wealth to make friends? And what on earth are these friends doing by inviting the disciples into eternal dwellings?

What will it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his soul? The words of Jesus are stark. As he stands before the people of his day, the choice is clear. Christ or the world which will soon pass away. His own generation was set on riches and the comforts of the world. Christ had set his face against them. On his way to Jerusalem, he gives a stark reminder to those who follow in his way. Seek the kingdom. The foolish will perish in the way. The righteous will be given the Kingdom and more.

With Jerusalem's end in sight, Jesus now reminds his disciples, be watchful. The kingdom to come will be marked by disciples who are to be watchful and ready to do the masters work. His delay is long. But this should cause his people to work. For when He returns, all will have to give an account, including his own. How ought we to remain watchful and waiting?

Jesus is on his way to Jerusalem for the last time. He has already declared the temple, the people and the city to be defiled by sin (John 2:13-15) and judgment was at their door (Matthew 3:10). Parables were given by Jesus to be easy explanations of essential truths. Unfortunately we have turned them into unsolvable puzzles with no clear picture in sight.   In the parable fo the soils, what on earth is Jesus talking about? What does it mean that Jesus fulfilled the law? This question has arisen and Christians have sought to answer throughout church history. What may be a legitimate question has often been clouded in confusion. Maybe we need to stop and look afresh what Jesus has to to say in Matthew 5:17-20 regarding what He came to fulfill.
