God's saving work began in the past when God the Father made a covenant with His Son to give him a people for his own possession. Jesus accepted the terms of the covenant and became a man and accomplished in his life and death salvation for all who trust in Him for salvation. God then begins to apply Jesus' work of salvation through the proclamation of the gospel when he draws sinners to himself. This drawing is called "effectual calling" - the summoning of people to God and enabling them to believe in Christ for salvation through the proclamation of the gospel.
