Human attempts to secure and maintain liberty are all doomed to fail in some measure because all people are rebels against God, while Jesus Christ secures true freedom because He forgives the penalty of sin, breaks the power of sin in believers and will one day grant total freedom from sin.

Forgiveness is an essential characteristic of all believers in Jesus Christ, since it marks us as His children and it enables us to love one another as Christ has loved us.

There is no hope for men and women (who must die and then face judgment) apart from the work of Christ (the great high priest of the new covenant) who was sacrificed once to put away sin so that, when he appears again, he might grant all the benefits of salvation to those who are waiting for His appearing.

Jesus Christ, the great high priest, is superior to all the priests of the old covenant, since He offers a superior sacrifice (his own unblemished blood) in the greater sanctuary (Heaven itself), so that His blood can provide all who believe with eternal redemption and cleanse our conscience from dead works so that we may serve the Living God with wholehearted joy.

Even though the entire Old Testament ritual was prescribed in detail by God Himself (with its elaborate sanctuary and priests offering sacrifice for sins), worshippers under the first covenant were painfully aware of their separation from God and the reality that all those rituals never finally cleansed their consciences.

Jesus Christ is now the mediator of a better covenant, a new covenant foretold by Jeremiah that would supersede the old, since it accomplished what the old could not - creating a people completely forgiven for sins, with God’s laws written on their minds and hearts, perfected by Christ’s sacrifice.

Unlike human priests, who serve in a shadow of heavenly reality, God's great high priest, the Lord Jesus Christ, is seated at the right hand of God the Father in the true holy places of Heaven, having offered His all-sufficient sacrifice, competent to minister forever on behalf of His people based on the new covenant.

Unlike human high priests who are sinful and die, Jesus Christ is perfectly fit to save fully and finally all who come to God through Him, since He was made high priest by God’s oath, lived a sinless life, offered up himself as the perfect sacrifice, was exalted to Heaven and lives forever to intercede for His own.
