  • Wednesday Q&A - Hypermobility, Ideal Movement Schedules, & Frozen Shoulder

Welcome to Wednesday Q&A, where you ask questions and we answer them!

In this episode, Lara and Kristin answer your questions about joint stability, weekly movement routines, and shoulder health. Listen to hear them dig into what's really happening when hypermobile joints "pop," share their own personal movement schedules, and offer guidance for anyone dealing with the early stages of a frozen shoulder.

    Your Questions:

    • Happy to hear you are bringing the podcast back. Here's my question. I have a hypermobile body. I often battle tight hips and a stiff lower back while balancing CrossFit, running, and LYT. I’ve noticed a painless, crunchy pop right at L4 specifically when stepping or pressing up into Warrior poses. Since hypermobile bodies tend to 'hang out' in the joints, is this L4 popping a sign that my tight hips are forcing a micro-instability in my lumbar spine during wide-stance transitions? How can I use the LYT method to ground my pelvis better so my lower back doesn't take the hit? Thank you for always pulling for us.
    • What is your ideal movement schedule look like? It seems like you’re in shape and have only gotten more fit over the years. I’ve been following you.
    • I have the beginning of a frozen shoulder, but haven’t received any advice from professionals, including my doctor. What advice would you give me to avoid it getting worse?

    Classes Mentioned:

    • Kristin's Hip Decompression - Beginner https://practice.lytyoga.com/programs/hip-decompression-beginner (a refreshed version of Push Down & Twist is coming soon!)
    • Lara's Strength Circuit #11 https://practice.lytyoga.com/programs/lyt-strength-circuit-11-intermediate (one option of eleven strength circuit classes)

  • Wednesday Q&A - Aging Pains, Bone-Density Training, & Healing the Root Cause of Pains

Welcome (back) to Wednesday Q&A, where you ask questions and we answer them!

In this episode, Lara and Kristin answer your questions about aging pains, bone density training, and healing Morton's neuroma.

    Your questions:

    • So happy the podcast is back. I have a question or more of an observation: I noticed more nerve pinching or small muscle tears recently, it never stays long. I move, I swim, I run, and it goes away. This is new for my (50 year old) body. My students also complain regularly (sciatica or other nerve or muscle pains … those who train a lot as athletes do always have something!) Is it only me? Or is there any biomechanical reason that as we age we tend to experience small pains? Any thoughts on this? how to avoid them? PS: now I understand and sympathize with people complaining and understand better why it is so easy to “fall into this decline narrative” … I noticed seniors, menopausal women, or athletes are the population complaining the most about small and most of the time temporary discomfort. With love and lots of good vibes to this new podcast series.
    • My question is in reference to jumping to increase bone density. LYT has always emphasized a soft landing. Now research shows that landing with force stimulates the body to build bone. Are both necessary in different situations?
    • How to heal Morton's Neuroma?

  • What Makes LYT Different: How LYT Compares to Others

We're Back (part 2)! The brand-new season of Redefining Movement is here!

In this second episode of their return, Lara and Kristin break down how LYT compares to other popular movement practices and what makes LYT unique. Drawing on their backgrounds as physical therapists, they explore the similarities and differences between LYT (Longevity · Yoga · Training) and traditional yoga, Pilates, strength training, CrossFit, barre method, and physical therapy itself.

    In this episode, they discuss:

    • LYT compared to traditional yoga – overlapping benefits, differing focuses/goals.
    • Where LYT and Pilates align, and where they diverge
    • Why strength training alone isn't enough, and how LYT incorporates strength while prioritizing mobility, coordination, and adaptability
    • How LYT compares to CrossFit – shared beliefs, different priorities
    • LYT compared to Barre – the role of movement variability and unpredictability in training
    • How LYT incorporates physical therapy, and how it widens the lens
    • Why education and body awareness are at the heart of the LYT philosophy

LYT isn't meant to replace any of these practices, but integrates the best principles from each into a system built around movement intelligence and long-term health.

In this episode, Lara & Kristin discuss:

    • Life updates from the last 18 months: college graduations, empty-nest adventures, pet news, and more
    • The LYT evolution & rebrand: what the acronym now stands for (Longevity, Yoga, Training) and why it better reflects the method
    • Why LYT has always been more than yoga, and how the rebrand makes that easier to explain

Welcome to Wednesday Q&A, where you ask questions and we answer them!

    Your questions:

    • Can we talk about the hand? I've heard of toe yoga and I use it in my PT practice and self-practice. Is there hand yoga? One thing my local LYT instructor says in class is to press the base of my index finger into the mat during any weight-bearing through the arm. I struggle with this. How can I improve and can you go into the physiology behind it?
    • Can LYT help my anxiety? Sometimes I've felt increased anxiety in other flow classes.
    • My question pertains to the stigma of knee pain. It seems as though the cottage industry of relief for knee pain has created an environment whereby if you experience ongoing knee pain, you must simply be doing something wrong. Despite my ongoing LYT practice and other attempts to remedy said knee pain, it still persists. Specifically, I experience this pain when walking downhill, downstairs, or doing things like weighted lunges or squat pulses from high crescent. In approximate terms, it generally radiates from below the patella on either side, which makes me think meniscus. I would characterize the discomfort as acute in that in more than a few cases, it may decrease when I'm more warmed up, but it never fully goes away. While I would not expect a diagnosis to be made from anecdotes in an email, it is unreasonable to think that some knee pain may not be entirely correctable through “better movement patterns,” strengthening the support structures. And if so, what metrics/means can be used to make that conclusive determination?

Welcome to Wednesday Q&A, where you ask questions and we answer them!

    Your questions:

    • I have a student who has trouble crossing his legs and other hip-related yoga poses. Do you have any advice on figuring out where the problem might be?

    • I’ve heard you talk about good PT (looking at the body globally) vs. bad PT (looking at a problem in isolation). Do you have any recommendations on finding a PT that falls into the good category?
