‘Only one thing is necessary' Paul says.

We are to live as citizen’s of God’s heavenly kingdom in a way that is consistent with and commends the gospel. This requires standing firm together in unity and courage in the face of opposition, recognising God’s sovereign hand at work in the midst of our trials.

To live is...

We all have some way of finishing that sentence. It may be to do with career or family or fame or success. But Paul's answer allows him to subsequently say, "to die is gain".

So what kind of life leads to this? What kind of life allows one to confidently say, "I will rejoice" - in the future tense? For Paul the answer is Christ.

What is more detrimental to the advance of the gospel?

Prosperity or persecution?

Paul writes to ensure the church knows that what has happened to him, in his imprisonment, has served to advance the gospel.
