Our longing for universal peace at Christmas time is good and yet terribly misplaced. Jesus meets our greatest need and only hope for eternal peace, “for he will save his people from their sins.”

In ancient culture there are two important aspects to a name – who names you and what the name means. In the case of Jesus it is not left to chance, “And you shall call his name Jesus.”

The phrase ‘She will bear a son’ points us to the heart of the gospel. She is a virgin. But God gives children to those who can’t in order to show that he is the one who brings salvation.
