Jesus cautions and reminds us that it’s easy to do the right and good things for all the wrong reasons.

There is a propensity in all of us to do the right things for all the wrong reasons. This is especially true in the church. This isn’t just at the giving level – in chapter 6 Jesus identifies 3 important practices he assumes we’ll do: give to the poor, pray, and fast.

In short Jesus is teaching us how to not be religious

The Way of Jesus is marked by love for God and people. The Sermon on the Mount is an invitation to live into this way fully. The Sermon on the Mount is wisdom from God to live a life that flourishes.
