We’re back to Genesis! Out of the garden and into the wild lands, we’re spending the rest of the spring in the book of Genesis. Andrew led us through a new perspective on the story of Jacob and Esau– and how we might be more like Esau than we might have thought.

Have you ever asked the question, “if Jesus has really risen, why is there still suffering in the world?”

Using the words of Paul from Romans 8, Robert talks to us about suffering, aches, hopes and our longing to see a more just world– and how God is still making all things new.

Once we are in Christ, our calling as Jesus followers transforms. All work is worship, and once Jesus is in us, we carry the Spirit everywhere we go.

No matter what we spend our days doing, whether we’re working in our passion or feeding a baby or cleaning the house or grocery shopping, we carry the mantle of missionary everywhere we go.

Belonging takes practice.

We all know that community is often more inconvenient than otherwise. It requires dedication, vulnerability, and a willingness to be known when we’re at our messiest. Sometimes, it leaves us hurt, deeply lonely, or overwhelmed with longing.

There is hope.

This week of our mini Easter series, Jessie looks at Jesus’ commitment to the table and to community after his resurrection, and how it applies to our little lives today.

The resurrection is not something that happened to Jesus. It’s something that happened to you in him.

What if we told you that you cannot transform yourself into the kind of person you want to be, and that actually, it’s good news?

In today’s episode of our mini-Easter-series, Robert talks about the reality of the resurrection as it applies to our current life–the whole, beautiful, terrible mess of it.

There is hope.

A seeking heart is a pull towards something you can’t quite name. This Easter, where have you given up hoping? What wishes have you stopped making? What dreams have you let die by the wayside?

The good news of Easter is that Jesus draws near in our disappointment and presents us with a new way through.

God will chase us down after our schemes fail. For this week’s episode of Genesis, Jessie talks to us about the story of Hagar and the faithfulness of God, as a God who sees and a God who will chase us down. A God who goes looking for all of his children, and who is close to us in our waiting.

This week's spiritual practice is the practice of study.

When I read Richard Foster's book Celebration of Discipline 25 years ago for the first time I almost skipped this chapter. It seemed like all we ever did as Church people was study. There was Sunday School and Sermons and Bible Studies and personal Bible reading. Every day, every week...we would open the Bible and study to understand the Bible. We believed that if we changed our minds with knowledge our whole lives would be changed by the knowledge itself. If we just knew what God wanted, then at least there was a chance we could do it.

This was the "knowledge is power" era. Culturally in post civil rights era America we believed that education was the silver bullet, the one thing that could make society work. If everyone was smarter and knew more stuff, the world would be a better place. The church had Bible verses that we would trot out too:

Proverbs 1:7 — "The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge."

Hosea 4:6 — "My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge."

John 8:32 — "You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free."

Colossians 1:10 — Bear fruit in every good work and grow in the knowledge of God.

In no other time in history was there more Bible knowledge than the end of the 20th century. It was the cultural apex of Bible knowledge because every corner of the church was studying hard, starting and building Bible Colleges and seminaries, training their kids in Bible quizzing and Awana memorization challenges.

But here is the thing. The church convulsed, and heaved under the weight of the pressure to know more....because knowing more did not make us better. I meet up with friends who are around my age, were faithful followers of Jesus for 30+ years and left the church the last 10 years, deconstructed and vanished. They know more Bible than most of you. They can quote it to you in multiple versions. But knowing about God does not bring you closer to God...ironically. The demons know maybe even more about God than any of us do, especially those who enjoyed his presence in heaven before the fall.

Knowing does not make you good.

So is the answer to study less? No. The answer is to study differently — and for different reasons.

“And Abram believed the Lord and the Lord counted him as righteous because of his faith.” For our next episode in our Genesis series, Bob walks through portions of Genesis 16, in which God enacts the most formal covenant in the Bible. Bob urges us to ask the right question–not a question of whether or not we believe in God, but whether or not we believe him, if we believe the promises of God and act upon that reality.

solitude, often referred to as "silence and solitude," does not mean "loneliness," nor does it mean "me time" like watching TV or doing an eye mask. In the same way as the previous disciplines we've discussed (fasting, prayer, and meditation), solitude is removing one thing to make space for something to take its place; in this case, it is stepping into quiet, alone spaces with the intent to listen and be filled up with the Father's presence. In his book, "Celebrations of Discipline," Richard Foster describes solitude like this: "Jesus calls us from loneliness to solitude… Loneliness is an inner emptiness. Solitude is inner fulfillment."

Silence and solitude are practices that we can carry with us at all times, no matter our surroundings, though having extended times in quiet and silence is vital. It's actually about trust–trusting that God is enough for us when we are alone, and enough for us when we are with people. We do not have to prove ourselves with words or actions, because we have made a habit of resting in and listening to God intentionally in every moment of our lives, and acting from that place. We fill up in the quiet, and we then carry that "portable sanctuary" everywhere we go.

Listen in for a solitude practice to engage with this Lent.
