  • RedPubPod #017 Mike James

Welcome to the Redhawk Publication's podcast, REDPUBPOD!

Redhawk Publications is honored to have as its virtual guest, poet Mike James. Today’s co-hosts, Robert & Tim, chat with Tennessee poet, Mike James, about his newest collection of poetry, Back Alley Saints at the Tiki Bar, published by Redhawk Publications.

You will hear some intriguing retrospective comments from Mike, including that this specific book has been a culmination of many things. He brings in everything he has learned about poetry while addressing lessons as it relates to today’s icons and reflecting on gender & fluidity. Notions on childhood.... notions of mortality are discussed as well. Back Alley Saints is all new poems, and Mike feels this collection is the book he was born to write.

Mentioned in this pod is Mike’s previous book, Portable Light, also published by Redhawk Publications. This selected collection focuses on his lifework in that it spans his writing between 1991 –2021 or 30 years’ worth of poetry.

Mike reads two poems from Back Alley Saints: St. Jane Mansfield and Last Poem. Mike shares that poet Ted Berrigan said, “we should all write one poem that encapsulates our lives to make it a joyful elegy” and Mike’s Last Poemlovingly and with much grace gives himself a faux send-off. Mike James’ is one of those rare “Poet’s Poet” and you will understand why when you listen to him. Mike gets humanity, so humanity simply digs Mike James! Well done, Mike... Well done!

  • RedPubPod #016 Austin Allran

Welcome to the Redhawk Publication's podcast, REDPUBPOD! Redhawk Publications is excited to have in the studio a very special author: Austin Allran.

Join today’s hosts, Richard, Patty, and Tim as they converse with author and Hickory, NC native, Austin Allran, about the writing journey that led to his first novel, The Legends of the Isle of Cats.

Our hosts were so engaged in Austin’s fascinating background (he’s an attorney and life-long public servant, having served in both the N.C. State House and Senate, as well as a current Catawba County commissioner) – they forgot to mention the title at the beginning of the pod. Let’s give it to you one more time, because this engrossing tome will keep you glued to your seat reading. This engaging mystery with Christian Existential overtones is entitled: The Legends of the Isle of Cats.

No one said writing is easy! Austin shares how the impetus of the book started in the 1990s, but his most earnest writing took place within the last ten years. His writing process is a little more unconventional, but it created a suspenseful mystery that spans generations and takes place in North Carolina. It’s a great read filled with memorable characters. Austin makes a warm and inciteful guest

The public is welcome to attend Austin’s book discussion and signing at the Patrick Beaver Memorial Library on Thursday, February 23rd from 6pm – 7pm in Hickory, NC.

  • RedPubPod #015 Ron Toler and Stephen Henderson, NC Veterans Writing Alliance Foundation

Welcome to the Redhawk Publication's podcast, REDPUBPOD!

Redhawk Publications is honored to have in the studio two special guests: Ron Toler, USAF – Retired and NC Veterans Writing Alliance Foundation Project Coordinator, and Stephen Henderson, USMC – Retired and NC Veterans Writing Alliance Foundation Project Coordinator.

Join us as hosts Richard and Robert chat with Ron Toler and Stephen Henderson about the recently published collection of veteran’s stories, Brothers and Sisters Like These. This anthology is comprised of a total of 36 veterans sharing over seventy stories, both in prose and poetry form, based on their experiences while serving in the military. Guests Ron and Stephen not only penned stories that make up this unique anthology, but they also are the project’s co-coordinators.

In 2014, a group of veterans gathered at the Charles George VA Medical Center in Asheville to participate in a creative writing program, which resulted in the first published anthology entitled, Brothers Like These. The idea was to get the veterans to write about their shared experiences either in the service or when they processed out. Writing gave them a voice; an opportunity to share their experiences with folks that had gone through the same challenges and even provided an opportunity to heal in some way.

Brothers and Sisters Like These is the most recent published collection which includes women’s voices as well. “We realized we were missing our sisters’ voices, and so this second go-round, women were very much a part of the writing project,” said Toler.

A result of this writing initiative was the creation of the 501 (c) (3) non-profit, The NC Veterans Writing Alliance Foundation. It was formed to continue the unique writing program which now includes all veterans, men and women, from all conflicts, including Vietnam, Desert Storm, Iraq, and Afghanistan.

All proceeds from the book go toward continuing writing workshops for veterans, as the main expense is paying for the Writer in Residence who leads the classes.

The public is welcome to see the veteran’s writing group share their stories live on the Leiman Mainstage at the Flat Rock Playhouse on Sunday, January 29th in Flat Rock, NC. Tickets will be sold the day-of at the playhouse for $20 and proceeds go to support the Blue Ridge Honor Flight.

  • RedPubPod #014 Cassidy Collins

Welcome to the Redhawk Publication's podcast, REDPUBPOD! Redhawk Publications is honored to have in the studio special guest Cassidy Collins. Not only is Cassidy the newest fiction author in the Redhawk Publications stable, but she is a colleague: Cassidy is a creative staff member in the Redhawk Communications department at Catawba Valley Community College here in Hickory, North Carolina.

Join us as Cassidy discusses her creative journey and writing process. It's daunting to think this young adult is not only holding down a full-time demanding job in a marketing department for a community college, but able to write for the fun of it. “The Aria,” her young adult, dystopian-themed novel is part of a trilogy, and was completed by the time she finished high school! In addition to a completed trilogy, she has a completed science fiction novel, “Floor #9” on the topic of chimera. (C-H-I-M-E-R-A… Yeah, get your Google Search box open to go down that rabbit hole. You're Welcome!). She’s even written several screenplays and fan fiction scripts. Quite the prolific writer for someone in their 20s!

Cassidy divulges her literary influences (or perhaps the lack thereof…) and you can hear how the RedPubPod staff are in awe of natural-born writing talent! Cassidy is making her own path and Redhawk Publications feels honored to be a small part of her journey.

Welcome to the Redhawk Publication's podcast, REDPUBPOD!

Redhawk Publications is honored to have as their guest on this episode author, actor, and artist, Fiely Matias.

In this episode, Filey shares his perspective on life as an artist and how defying “NO” helps him become even more creative. Don’t ever tell Fiely NO, in short. He’ll prove ya wrong! Fiely discusses the journey that led him to write a children’s book ("Reebee Deoo, Dada"), and some of the scars received in his childhood that helped create the strong anti-bullying theme as well as the name of the book.

Hearing how Fiely and his partner in life and partner in art, Dennis Giacino, collaborate together was a lesson in relationships! They work together from their strengths and are honest with their 'notes' with one another. Dennis not only discussed how “Disenchanted” got mounted in New York, but also shared a glimpse of what we might see from a one-act musical version of Fiely’s book for young audiences. • RedPubPod #010 Paul Jones

Welcome to the Redhawk Publication's podcast, REDPUBPOD!

It’s always pleasant when we have guests like Paul Jones in the studio. Not only does he share how you might want to read his poetry, but he gives you hints on how you might want to read poetry in general. “You need not know that” was a recurring theme during the RedPubPod’s discussion with the author. In short, it’s okay to read and feel how you “read and feel” a poem. All feels are valid! If you are a seasoned poet, you might dig a little deeper and find those extra layers, but poetry should be accessible to readers that read regardless of their relationship with poetry.

This episode is geared to poetry fans as well as for those that might be initially intimidated by reading poems. Very instructional and engaging!

Catch Paul at a poetry reading on Sunday, September 11, 2022, 4 pm at Scuppernong Books poetry in person along with Kate Kehoe, and Pat Riviere-Seel.

Paul will be participating in the Ashe County on The Same Page Literary Festival Sept. 13 – 17th:
