Sure, this is a remake of a film (The Magnificent Seven) that was an American version of another film (Seven Samurai), but the source material has been the fodder for countless interpretations over the years so we can forgive it a little. We also have a great time debating the time and place for human violence and how it related to God's Justice. Enjoy!     On this episode of the podcast: The writer/director who brought us Once and Begin Again gives us another touching, musically driven story with lots of heart and plenty of passion in Sing Street. This time we get to see 1980s Dublin through the eyes of a group of teenagers who are trying to deal with all the things that teenagers deal with; bullies, girls, identity, and tough school authority figures.     On this episode of the podcast: It seems like the films from Laika Studio fly under a lot of people’s radar, but also seem to be incredibly enjoyed by those who do see them (Coraline, Para Norman, The Boxtrolls). The latest, Kubo and the Two Strings has been a breath of fresh air in a Summer of forgettable animated movies. With incredible hand-crafted animation and a story that is not something we see very much, we not only are not engaged visually, but thematically. Hell or High Water gives is a genre blending joy and has so many interesting themes that we are not short for topics to discuss. From systemic poverty, to the bonds of two people on a similar mission, this film covers a lot of ground and makes some pretty indicting accusations about rural America and raises some pretty questionable answers to those problems. The film actually gives us a chance to talk about a curious trend of disconnect between audiences and critics in 2016. This seems to have sparked a counter-criticism that has spawned a "positivity"-- or almost "white-washing"-- movement of audience interaction with film that has tried to stay focused more on feeling instead of technical merit. While we find value in both these perspectives, we ultimately look for the middle ground and ask ourselves if we've ever truly seen a bad movie.... Enjoy!
