For we are so often of the mind that if we were living in the days in which the Lord Jesus ministered here on the earth and if we heard His words and beheld His miracles, we would be more likely to believe in Him and His power to save, to believe in His faithfulness to provide for all our needs, to hope in the certainty of all His promises. That is because we have adopted the modern day, unbiblical view that -seeing is believing-.----But dear ones, seeing is not believing- for many saw all these miracles with their eyes and heard the words of the Lord Jesus with their ears, and yet believed not. The problem is not that there is not enough evidence to believe in Jesus Christ-the problem is that we do not take the Lord Jesus at His word. Overview: A faithful witness is one who bears testimony to the truth of Jesus Christ -whether in a court of law, at work, at school, in the home, in the church, or any other place-. A faithful witness looks at his whole life -wherever he may find himself- as if he were in a courtroom, so that by his words and his deeds he points people to the God of truth who is revealed in Holy Scripture -Isaiah 43-10-12-. What do our words and deeds reveal to our children, to our spouses, to our parents, or to our friends about us as witnesses for Christ- Shame, embarrassment, fear, or love for Christ---A faithful testimony is not necessarily a long and articulate discourse before others concerning the truth. It may simply be a -Yes- or a -No-, or may be walking away from that which is immoral -Psalm 101-3-. You do not need a degree in theology to be a faithful witness. Overview: A shepherd-s love for his sheep is revealed in his dedication to protect them from predators that would scatter and destroy them even at the expense of his own safety. The Lord Jesus declares concerning Himself this very truth in John 10-11-12. The hireling flees when it becomes dangerous, but the Good Shepherd -and all faithful shepherds- will not leave the flock vulnerable to the attack of wolves. Why- For one reason- He loves the sheep and desires their safety more than his own -John 15-13-14-. Warning and protecting the sheep Christ has entrusted to a faithful shepherd -pastor- is one of the chief evidences of the love that he loves the sheep.--This truth is likewise declared by the Apostle Paul in his fervent farewell speech to the elders and pastors from Ephesus who will see his face no more. These are the parting words of their spiritual father in the faith to men who had been converted and trained under his ministry. What is especially on Paul-s mind- It is the safety of the sheep. His concern is not for himself, though he has already said -bonds and afflictions- await him in Jerusalem. Overview: As we learned in the previous sermon, the Apostle Paul paints a portrait of the faithful minister of Jesus Christ with four different faces. The first face he paints of a faithful minister is that of a Servant of Christ -serving the Lord Jesus before anyone else-. The second face he paints of a faithful minister is that of a Preacher of the whole counsel of God -teaching all that the Lord has revealed in His Word even when it is unpopular-.----The third face he paints of a faithful minister is that of a Runner in finishing the race that the Lord Jesus has set--before him -looking in faith to Jesus who awaits him at the finish line-. The fourth face of a faithful minister is that of a Watchman to the Church -warning the Church of enemies that would seek the Church-s compromise and destruction-.--In light of this portrait of a faithful minister, Paul calls the elders of the Church of Ephesus to follow him as he has followed Jesus Christ, and he informs these elders -who are his children in the faith- that they will see his face no more. So this is Paul-s farewell speech to them, and he appeals to them and charges them as soldiers to fulfill two important aspects of their ministry if they would be faithful- -1- Take heed to yourselves- and -2- Take heed to all the flock. What happens when a ministers forgets either of these two aspects of his charge- Disaster- Paul appeals with red flashing lights-BEWARE- These have been the downfall of many ministers. This is the two-fold charge that a faithful minister cannot afford to forget without severe consequences.

Overview: What is a faithful minister of Jesus Christ called by the Lord to be- A motivational speaker- An entertainer- A CEO of a corporation- A fund raiser- A dreamer of great plans- A builder of cathedrals- No doubt, a faithful minister will wear different hats at time within a church, but it is not the world-s model that should frame our understanding of what a faithful minister is, but rather the Word of the Lord alone. Just as the Lord has instituted the ministry, so He alone is the one who can tell us what constitutes a faithful minister, and this He has done in His Word.----The Apostle Paul explains that ministers of Jesus Christ are stewards who have been given spiritual food and gracious provision for the household of God, which they are in their ministry to give to hungry and thirsty souls. But Paul states there is one qualification for every steward who is under the authority of his master- faithfulness to the charge given to him by his master to care for the household -1 Corinthians 4-1-2-. Overview: Should we make an issue of which day of the week to set apart for worship- This is a matter of worshipping God as He has appointed, not as man has appointed and not as pleases or is most convenient for man. We have no more right to pick the day of the week to worship God, than we have to pick what we should include in our worship service. All that pertains to the worship of God is regulated by God Himself in Holy Scripture. What the Lord alone authorizes in the New Testament for worship is to be used by us in worship. God is jealous that we worship Him in spirit -worshipping the Lord with our whole heart-, but also that we worship Him in truth -not according to what pleases me, but according to His Word of truth-. God consumed Nadab and Abihu -Aaron-s sons- for offering strange fire that did not proceed from the altar appointed by the Lord --and offered strange fire before the LORD, which he commanded them not- Leviticus 10-1-. Yes, it really does matter which day of the week we worship as Christ-s Church -it is a bound of our unity that we gather to worship the same day each week-. He has not left it to our speculation, but has shown us in Scripture that day- the Lord-s Day, the first day of the week. We will focus our attention upon the following two main points from our text this Lord-s Day- -1- Paul Leaves Ephesus to Minister to Young Churches -Acts 20-1-6-- -2- Paul Arrives in Troas and Leads Worship on the First Day of the Week -Acts 20-7-.

Overview: Perhaps one of the greatest trials to bear when standing for the truth of Jesus Christ is the burden of standing alone while hearing the lies, the mockery, and the insults hurled your way. Whereas physical blows make one look like a martyr, mockery and insults make one look like a fool and scar not only the flesh but the spirit. Parents, take heed that your discipline helps your child to learn and grow rather than crushing the spirit under a constant barrage of ridicule and scorn. Husbands and wives, do not make yourselves feel better by making one another look like a fool. Such attacks go very deep indeed.----If anyone knew what it was to suffer alone the public mockery, insults, and shame from a crowd, it was the Lord Jesus Christ as He hung upon that cursed cross and suffered such shame for those who were chosen in Him from all eternity. He was not ashamed to bear the shame of our sin--as He suffered as no man has ever suffered. Jesus is not ashamed to call us His brethren, though He is absolutely holy and we are filled with shameful thoughts, words, and deeds -Hebrews 2-11-. Our Savior endured the loneliness of all such indignities upon the cross so that you--and I would never have to suffer similar indignities alone. Let us consider the following three examples of shame that Christ suffered upon the cross in the first three hours of His crucifixion- -1- The Shame of Nakedness -Matthew 27-35-36-- -2- The Shame of Being Numbered with--Criminals -Matthew 27-37-38-- and -3- The Shame of Further Mockery -Matthew 27-39-44-.
