The work of David Lynch has often served as a touchstone for much of our deliberations on the films we have reviewed here at ReidsonFilm. When he died on the 15th January 2025, all four of us were shocked and I think it’s fair to say that the world lost some of its colour that day. So we thought we would have a recorded discussion in which we would talk about, amongst other things, his debut feature film, Eraserhead. This is our way of paying tribute to not just one of the great filmmakers, but one of the great artists, of our time.

Ho, ho, ho! Hard to imagine this is our 100th week of publishing ReidsonFilm and as it lands on Xmas Eve we thought that we would have another go at a podcast. Naturally we decided on the perfect Christmas film by ReidsonFilm favourite, Stanley Kubrick: Eyes Wide Shut.

Or is it an anti-Xmas film? It’s certainly the case that fairy lights and Christmas trees appear in practically every shot, and yet the yuletide season doesn’t get a mention – unless you count the film’s finale, a festive shopping spree.

Arguably his most divisive film, Eyes Wide Shut was Kubrick’s first completed project after a 12-year hiatus and then he died, just six days after his final edit. Starring Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman – the Hollywood power couple – the marketing suggested that audiences were in for a raunchy erotic thriller. Turned out the film was more existential nightmare than Silent Night, Steamy Night.

Something a little less taxing this week - pardon the pun. For three quarters of ReidsonFilm The Phantom Menace was the first Star Wars film they saw. Twenty five years after the film’s release in 1999 it is back on the big screen so we thought that we would take another collective look. Some of us have seen it many times since that initial release, others not.

We are also aware that some of our readers may have little knowledge, or interest, in the Star Wars franchise, so here is a brief synopsis of The Phantom Menace episode: A Jedi Master who goes by the name of Qui-Gon Jinn takes his apprentice, Obi-Wan Kenobi on a not-so secret mission to secure a peaceful end to an interplanetary trade deal, while protecting Queen Amidala of Naboo. On their adventures they come across a small boy who may turn out to be the Chosen One.

Intriguing, yes? Join us as we debate the merits of this game of cosmic pinball. The high or low-point of George Lucas’s space saga? Ben-Hur rip-off or considered allegorical think-piece on the politics of Empire? Who will win our very own Duel of the Fates?

ReidsonFilm are back with another podcast and here we have a pretty detailed discussion about one of this year’s most significant, and important, films: The Zone of Interest, directed by Jonathan Glazer. Winner of Academy Awards for Best International Feature and Best Sound it’s a film that tells a story of the Holocaust, but in a way that few films have done before.

As promised in our last review ReidsonFilm are back with yet another podcast. Having watched and loved Isao Takahata’s Grave of the Fireflies we took a trip down the Yellow Brick Road to our local picture palace and watched the new film by that other great animator from Studio Ghibli, Hayao Miyazaki. Ten years after announcing his retirement from film production he is back and in this podcast we review The Boy and the Heron but will also hear about Alice in Wonderland, The Wizard of Oz, and of course(!) The Shining. We also tackle the great debate of our time: subs v dubs. Enjoy…

Yes, we have come to the end of our first season of ReidsonFilm. So we thought that it would be good to sit back, reflect on the films we have seen and give out some awards. Someone also had the bright idea that we should have a go at making a podcast. It is our first attempt so a bit rough around the edges and we had so much to say that we ran out of time.
