  • 34. Trust and Company Culture: A Conversation with a Former Fortune 200 CEO

Bill Morean is the former CEO and Chairman of a Fortune 200 company and a good friend of mine. After studying aviation from Western Michigan University, he briefly worked as a bush pilot in Alaska. In 1978 at the age of 22, after buying a majority stake in his father's company, Jabil, Bill became the CEO. Over 35 years under his leadership, the company grew from 90 employees at one facility with annualrevenue of $700,000 to a $17-billion organization with 100,000 employees at 60 facilities in 19 countries.

Bill joins me today to share stories of how he built a company culture rooted in trust and appreciation. We discuss his unique and personable leadership style and explain how the impact of trusting your employees creates a distinct company culture. We share several stories, some of which describes employees making mistakes - myself included - and discuss his perspective on handling those situations. We also discusshow he handled difficult decisions as the company leader such as letting go of employees that are long-term friends and addressing inter-organizational romantic relationships as well as his perspective on leaders 'being lonely at the top.'

"Don't try to be the 'rigid guy at the chalkboard' leader that you think you should be. Go be you." - Bill Morean

This week on Relationships! Let's Talk About It:

    • Reminiscing on old times and my experience while working at Jabil.
    • How Bill led the company as a 'servant leader.'
    • Why he admired my decision to leave the company to pave my own path and career goals instead of resenting it.
    • How his leadership style enabled us to build a deeper friendship after I left the company.
    • The impact of deferring responsibilities onto others in your organization instead of facing challenges you, as the leader, should handle yourself.
    • How he approached the challenge of letting go of three employees that were his high school friends.
    • Why he felt joyful about 'passing the baton' when he retired.
    • Why character strength is crucial for leading a successful company.
    • The importance of trusting your employees to do their job and make mistakes without micromanaging them.
    • Why he believes balancing appreciation with direct, honest critiquing helps your employees receive the critique more easily.
    • The mistake I made during a customer presentation while working at Jabil and how his value in me as a person encouraged me to be comfortable and accountable for the mistake.
    • Examples of how he authentically appreciated his employees by feeding their strengths to help them achieve their goals.
    • Embracingthe 'human aspect' of inter-organizational relationships.
    • Why he believes 'feeling lonely at the top' depends on the relationships you build with your team.
    • How he naturally closed the gap between himself and his employees.
    • How he embraced the 'open door policy' in a large organization.
    • How he encouraged social connection between his employees and how it impacted the company culture.
    • How he coached his employees to be better in their role or to become better leaders.

  • 30. HeartShare: Emotional Infidelity: Is It Really Cheating?

Being in a happy relationship doesn't mean you stop getting attracted to other people. Attraction is a natural process of life. So, when does the attraction turn into an emotional affair? Is it considered cheating if you have emotional attachments with someone - even without being physically or sexually intimate?

I share my personal and professional stories of emotional infidelity and how to use them to have a deeper and more authentic relationship. I also share the signs of an emotional affair, the slippery slopes to understand and watch for in your relationship as well as the different ways to safeguard your relationship from them.

My sister, Eydie, joins me today to share her inspiring and unique story of what she and her family went through when they chose open adoption. We discuss the open adoption process as well as how she and her family - including her daughter's birth mother, Kim - broke the social taboos on adoption as they all continue to pursue a healthy relationship built on trust, openness, and love. We also discuss the incredible story of how Eydie and Kim worked together during Sage's birth as well as the astonishing backstories that led Sage to be comfortable in disclosing that she's adopted.

  • 26. HeartShare: Constructive Criticism?

You will often see the words disapproval, judgment, and faults when you do a Google search on the definition of the word criticism. Many people believe that offering constructive criticism helps improve and build relationships - whether personal or professional. With the negative words associated with the word criticism, why are we surprised that many relationships fail to achieve their goal of finding solutions to the challenges they encounter?

Today, I share what appreciation is and how it is related to criticism. I discuss the big distinction between complaints and criticism, how to test yourself to know if you're being critical, and the difference between judging-type questions and learning-type questions. I share stories of how criticism creeps up in my own personal relationships, how I 'dial down' my inner critic, and how it impacts your external behaviors and criticism. I also share the formula for resolving differences, what relationship hygiene is and the relevance of doing it, and how your habits affect your ability to be positive or negative in your relationships.

"Love does not survive critical judgements from a loved one." - Pripo Teplitsky

This week on Relationships! Let's Talk About It:

    • The difference between constructive criticism and constructive feedback.
    • Why we need to wipe out criticism as much as possible.
    • One defining aspect of criticism.
    • Examples of critical statements versus statements of constructive complaint.
    • Causes of relationship erosion between couples who have been together for many years.
    • The difference between advice-giving and criticism.
    • Why people do not change when criticized.
    • How habits of criticism creep up in my marriage and how my wife and I handle these situations.
    • How criticism fuels habitual anger.
    • How to dial down the inner critic in you.
    • The story of how I learned best through a coach who gave encouraging feedback, focused on the solution and positivity.
    • How children interpret their parents' constant criticism.
    • What matters in a relationship - getting things done versus contributing to each other's happiness and well-being.
    • Different approaches when you desire to give unsolicited advice.
    • Why it's crucial to stick to one complaint at a time.
    • What happens when you try to focus on more than one complaint per discussion.
    • Why the transformational process is more significant than the resolution process.
    • Why you should avoid discussions when you're busy and stressed out.
    • How to practice changing the way you think about the people in your life.
    • The relevance of creating habits to be more positive, open, and curious.

  • 25. Women Working in Male Dominated Workplaces

Mana Vermeulen-McLeod is a fascinating woman who can talk about everything from hairstyles to the different types of chainsaws. She is a tree worker, carpenter, and conflict mediator at Earthaven Ecovillagewhere she has resided since 2007. Originally from Holland, Mana is an advocate for The Work that Reconnects, a staff member at the Southeast Wise Women's Herbal Conference, and a student adviser for Gaia University. After a decade of being part of her community and facilitating conflict resolution, Mana currently focuses on supporting and helping others create the life they want, grounded in authenticity, through her life coaching practice.

Mana joins me today to share her experience as a woman working in male-dominated workplaces and discuss the physical challenges women face in the tree-working and carpentry industry. We dive into stories on the challenges she and her husband faced while working together as colleagues in the tree industry and how their relationship grew and flourished. We also discuss the other side of the coin on this topic as Mana flips questions back at me, since my work in therapy is a female dominated industry where I use a lot of feminine energy such as nurturing, listening, and empathy.

"Masculine energy the container. The feminine energy is what is inside of that container that gets to blossom if it's in a good and safe container." - Mana Vermeulen-McLeod

This week on Relationships! Let's Talk About It:

    • Her first few experiences as a woman carpenter and how she gained experience in the industry.
    • When mentoring and apprenticeship are more educational compared to "formal" education.
    • How much of her overall experience was good and positive.
    • How she keeps it light in the workplace so she can be part of the "boy's club."
    • The pattern she recognized that she needs to change.
    • Why she felt relief when she eventually gave up the impulse to lead her husband while working together.
    • How having boundaries allowed her to blossom.
    • How she responds to situations when she gets downplayed by others for being a woman.
    • How her Arkansas tree work employment paved the way for more employment opportunities for women.
    • Why it's important for her to calmly talk about her husband and maintain friendships among her colleagues.
    • The significance that the male and female energy play regarding decision-making on which trees to cut or nurture.
    • The pay structure and what it's going to take for women to acquire higher compensation.
    • Why she'd rather work with men in tree work and how she sets boundaries.
    • One of the rewarding niche markets she landed in when she did carpentry.
    • The different attitudes men and women have towards leaders or instructors.
    • Advice for men on the crew regarding how to treat women.
