Black August is a month of remembrance and resistance observed each August to honor Black freedom fighters, political prisoners, and the ongoing struggle against racial oppression. It began in the 1970s among incarcerated people in California’s prisons. The month pays tribute to those who have resisted slavery, colonialism, and mass incarceration, while also serving as a time for study, reflection, and solidarity with liberation movements worldwide. We speak today with Kalonji Changa, author of the bestselling book, “How to Build a People’s Army” and organizer of thepeoplesarmy.org. He’s also co-producer of the documentary “Organizing is the New Cool.”
