Ever wondered how Tom Stephan created the name Superchumbo?
On this episode, I sit down with Tom and talk about his life in London, his music career and his sobriety. I’ve played a lot of his records over the years, and still play his new productions. I know a lot of you DJs can also say the same. For my dancers, party goer’s and club kids out there, you have danced to his music for hours on end. He opened up about overcoming addiction, the 12 steps and touring as a sober DJ. I found a lot of inspiration in our conversation, and I know you will find some as well.
In this episode you will discover:
- Tom’s first love of music
- Tom’s influences in electronic music
- Tom’s falling in love with House Music
- How he came up with the name Superchumbo
- Tom’s creative process and flow in the studio
- Who he listens to when not working in the studio
- Sobriety thru the 12 Steps

Sydney Blu has established herself as one of the top electronic producers and DJs in the world. With an unbridled passion for live performance, music production, and all-around artistic creativity, Sydney has risen herself to the pinnacle of the electronic music industry.
A proudly Canadian artist, Sydney’s success is largely attributed to her relentless touring schedule which she’s upheld for several years. In 2009, Sydney Blu founded her own imprint, Blu Music, on the principle of authentic, dancefloor-rich house and techno.
On top of that, Sydney has released music on some of the most recognized labels in the industry including Mau5trap, Toolroom, Kinetika, Material Series, KMS Records, VIVa Music, and more. Her release "Give It Up For Me" on Mau5trap Recordings was one of Beatport’s highest selling songs, earning Sydney the rank of first female electronic music producer to have a top 10 hit on the platform.
This year marked another milestone for the top-selling electronic artist, as she has currently hit Top 20 on the Beatport Tech House chart with her new single “Mind Games” on Hot Since 82’s Knee Deep in Sound. The song also was the top selling track on the labels Amsterdam Dance Event sampler making Sydney shine once again. This year, she released a run of solid releases on Roger Sanchez's Undr the Rdr, Gene Farris’s Farris Wheel Recordings, and was remixed by Italian techno heavy weight Pirupa. Looking forward, expect releases from Sydney Blu under Joeski's Maya Recordings and many more.

I have a 10-minute powerful pause meditation that is on the mindful mixtape. If you want me to send that to you, text the words "meditatenow" to 44222 and I'll send that over to you now.
What do you do when you are stuck in a creative rut and feel blocked?
As creatives and artists, we often find these moments in our lives where we are full of inspiration and ideas that scream for our attention. It's almost as if we are compelled to create. There have been times in my life that I am so cold to create something that I literally have to stop everything to get the idea out.
It's like this force that comes over for me. Other times I feel uninspired and unmotivated to create anything.
This is where the pause button comes in.
I have found that:
I personally, like to take walks, get outside and connect with nature. I have the luxury of a flexible schedule that allows me to do so and I happen to live in one of the most beautiful places on earth, Colorado.
BUT, I have deadlines too and sometimes I can't break away for a few hours.
You can pause for only10 minutes and it can be so helpful.
Now, when I say a 10-minute break, I mean really break!
Walk away from the project and pause.
I'm a fan of meditation moments during my day to connect with myself and then I can come back to the project feeling refreshed instead of depleted.
I know you have 10 minutes in your day to pause.
Your creative projects will thank you for it.
For those of you who are saying "but Alyson, I'm not working on creative projects" The pause button can work for you as well. Chances are something is going on in your work or personal life that makes you feel a bit challenged or uninspired, you too can rock the pause button, take a moment to recenter and come back to the mix.
That's one of the things that works for me.
How do you like to pause? What are some of your favorite ways to deal with creative blocks?
