  • Episode 107: Football in Tudor England (A World Cup Special Edition_

[WORLD CUP SPOLI] In honor of England making it through their first knockout round, here's an episode on Tudor football. One of the deadliest sports in Tudor England, second only to archery, football was not really a sport we would recognize today. But people have been passionate about it since the first recorded match in England in 1170! Here we look at football in the Tudor period (Henry VIII had specially made football boots!).

  • Supplemental: Tudor Music Hour Episode 3: Tudor Music as Propaganda
A few years ago I did a podcast episode on Tudor portraits as propaganda - the Tudors are known for using the great portrait artists like Holbein to further their message of strength and virility. But what about music? Was there a way they used music to spread a message too? In this episode, we look at three examples of times when music was used to further the narrative of the Tudors. Remember you can listen to the full show live every Sunday at 9am on Mad Wasp Radio in the UK (or via TuneIn worldwide).

  • Episode 106: Midsummer in Tudor England
It's the Summer Solstice! If you're a pagan, this is a pretty big deal to you, and I won't interrupt your time at Stonehenge... but if you're not, it's still pretty cool, and was an important time in Tudor England. How did our Tudor friends celebrate these longest days of the year? Fire, fairies, magic, and flowers abound!

  • Supplemental: The Tudor Music Hour Episode 001
I've recently started a radio program, available in the UK on Mad Wasp Radio, featuring Tudor music. I'm releasing the episodes here on the podcast feed as Supplemental episodes to my show, and also they won't have the full pieces of music (because of copyright - on the radio I can play the full pieces, but here I can't, sadly). Go to TudorMusicHour.com to get a link to the Spotify Playlist, and learn more about the show. I'd love to hear what you think about this show, and I'm so excited I have this opportunity to do a show totally on Tudor music!

  • Episode 104: Elizabeth and the Pretender
In 1580 Portugal was in the midst of a succession crisis. Don Antonio had a good claim to the throne, but he was illegitimate. Philip II of Spain had a claim, but he was Spanish, and thus, a foreigner. Philip took the throne, leaving Don Antonio an exile with a claim to the throne. He found some support in England, where Elizabeth saw him as an asset in her fight against Philip and Spain in the leadup to the Armada. This one event in Elizabeth's foreign policy sheds light on her calculating nature, and how she
