As much as we try to deny it, we all have an inner Christian legalist that is clearly exposed in the way that we treat others. We introduce lists of do’s and dont’s that divide our community and lead to us unfairly treating others differently. Although we are familiar with the Gospel and its’ message of grace, we are not immune to falling into this way of thinking as even Peter was susceptible to.

Christianity is so very different from other religions because the burden of salvation is not placed on ourselves. We cannot do anything to earn it. Paul’s exhortation to the Galatians is to remain vigilant and not let the gospel of grace become debased into a works based system. As we will study today, Paul uses his own testimony to defend the gospel of grace and we explore the takeaways for the Galatians as well as ourselves today.

When Paul writes his letter to the church of the Galatians, the new Christians were being led astray by Judaizers, who were spreading their own false version of the Gospel by adding rules and removing the essence of the Gospel message, that is is received by Grace. Today, we look at Paul’s introduction and what is true about himself, what’s true about Jesus, and what’s true about the Galatians and us as well.
