Director Zack Snyder has reignited the debate over Batman's supposed "no-kill" rule after an appearance on the Joe Rogen podcast, fanning the flames of fandom once more. It’s not a new argument, and it has continued to rear its head every single time a superhero movie comes out, especially when it’s from a filmmaker that has a more specific vision than, say, a made-by-committee Marvel or DC film. The question constantly arises in these fan spheres of whether or not a superhero character, particularly one of prominence and popularity, should kill their enemies. As mythical beacons of the comic-book page, many of these characters have become larger than life, standing for a model of humanity, rather than a real-life character faced with real-life decisions.
In this essay, I dive deep into the history of Batman's no-kill rule, the concept of mythology (and religion), and explore the depths of reality, morality, and entertainment as it pertains to The Dark Knight dealing out death to his enemies. Should Batman Kill? Is there an answer to this much-debated question?
