  • Basquiat

In an episode that was destined to happen, we tackle one of our mutual favorite films, and share a compelling, dense discussion about it, as well as it's subject, brilliant 1980s painter Jean Michel Basquiat. As artists, we have a unique perspective on this film, as well as the world it portrays, and that angle leads to one of our best dissections yet!

  • Moonlight

For a last minute tribute to Pride month, we dive into the best picture winner from 2016. While many have discussed it, we felt it worth a fresh look in these times, and dig into it's connections to the issues at the core of Black Lives Matter, but more importantly, we dig even deeper into what it offers emotionally and philosophically, as well as cinematically as we chat about the merits of director Barry Jenkins.

  • Straight Outta Compton & Friday - F. Gary Gray Spotlight

In an upbeat companion to our previous episode on Boyz in the Hood & Clockers, we follow the thread to relevant and connected tales, one an epic music biopic, the other perhaps THE quintessential stoner movie-- both are directed by the uber-talent F. Gary Gray. We tie everything together thematically between all four films, while also lavishing specific attention on Gray as a director and digging behind the scenes of his wide ranging career.

  • Boyz in the Hood & Clockers

Continuing our discussion about the core issues at the heart of the Black Lives Matter protests, we turn our eyes on policing and the systemic marginalization of black Americans through two definitive classics. It's another talk laden with hard truths and fascinating observations, but also plenty of heart and fun along the way, because that is what both films and auteurs John Singleton & Spike Lee, offer the viewer!

  • Just Mercy

In the wake of the #BlackLivesMatter - #GeorgeFloyd protests, it was a trick to find the right film to talk about, but thanks to Warner Bros. making Just Mercy free to rent all month, the choice became easy. In an interwoven discussion of the protests, systematic racism, the death penalty and our collective social responsibilities, we explore the way this film compares to similar dramas, and whether or not you should watch it!

  • "Quarantine Viewing 4" - Bloodshot and the Gentlemen, plus Star WARS: TROS rebuttal!

In a rare double first take, we look at two very recent films, Bloodshot from the Valiant Cinematic Universe, and the Gentlemen from Guy Ritchie, giving our two cents on whether you should or should not rent them. As usual we stray into some interesting and varied tangents on filmmakers, comics & special effects quality or lack thereof. Also, we take another look at Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, and try to settle a few uneasy feelings about it.

  • "Quarantine Viewing 3" - Sonic the Hedgehog & Navy SEALs vs Under Siege

In this fast paced and hilarious episode, we have our "first take" review of Sonic the Hedgehog, featuring a deliciously maniacal Jim Carrey, and then we go down macho memory lane with our compare/contrast of Navy SEALs & Under Siege-- the description of which pretty much speaks for itself.

  • Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker - "it is what it is?"

Recorded in December 2019, just after our first viewing of TROS, this episode was saved for the return from hiatus, and the digital release of the film. As the finale of an epic, 40 year saga, a lot rides on Episode IX. Do we think it lives up to the responsibility of satisfying hordes of picky fans and wrapping up dozens of dangling threads? Does it undo the Last Jedi?? Listen to find out!

  • "Quarantine Viewing 2" - Happy!, Logan Lucky, Romeo is Bleeding, Escape from Pretoria, Why Women Kill, Hannibal - Crime Special!

This long awaited (by us) dive into our mutual favorite genre includes a wide selection, both from film & tv, of mostly recent crime entries, but with one sweaty, notable exception. We talk why crime is a great canvas for broad story & character possibilities, and how amazing performances come from such characters when actors are given chances to be emotionally risky or vulnerable. Highlighting the brilliant work of Christopher Meloni, Gary Oldman, Lena Olin, Juliette Lewis & Annabella Sciorra, as well as the extra impressive Lucy Liu, we also discuss how actors grow on you over time, and how certain characters change how you feel about them permanently.
