Morbid Saint’s “Spectrum of Death” was a rarity in 1990 - a brand new thrash act that kicked ass, while many of the older acts were peaking or showing wear/tear, and new, vibrant acts were in short order. ‘Lock Up Your Children' starts this brutal thrash affair with an amped-up Slayer 'Captor of Sin' riff before Pat Lind’s barbaric vocals come in and shine. Lind and the band remind listeners most obviously of Kreator, as the band has often been coined the American version- sick breakdowns like the 1:25 mark help sell this point with aplomb. Hailing from Wisconsin, they never quite launched the way they could have, probably arriving too late for the thrash boom and soon broke up, not releasing a follow-up until 2015.

After Larry Lalonde left Possessed, he hooked up with a bass player named Les Claypool and joined up with Blind Illusion who'd been around the Bay area since the early 80s. They helped transition the band into one of the coolest progressive thrash acts around with "The Sane Asylum" as 'Blood Shower' demonstrates.

New Jersey seemed to produce a certain type of caustic, hyper-speed thrash that Whiplash's "Power and Pain" personified! Just the very title 'Power Thrashing Death' leaves no stone upturned with brutal vocals, relentless drumming and an evil Slayer-ish riff that puts a sinister grin on your face.

Bay Area thrash metal champions, Vio-Lence may have been latecomers to the scene, but they quickly made up for lost time with their scathing debut, “Eternal Nightmare.” Guitarist duo Phil Demmel and Robb Flynn (pre-Machinehead) unleash a cavalcade of aggressive riffs throughout, but the title track is extra special. After a great intro, the nasty speed kicks in at the 40 second mark with no frills, before the controversial Sean Killian’s vocals rip in. He can’t sing, but it does it fast and with hardcore-esque panache, so it works for the approach and grows on you. Shout out to Dean Dell’s killer bass, which rivals D.D. Verni here.
