Dr Xiujian Peng is a Senior Research Fellow in the Centre of Policy Studies (CoPS) at Victoria University (VU). Dr. Peng has extensive experience in the development and application of large-scale computable general equilibrium (CGE) models. She has published widely in international peer reviewed journals.
Dr. Peng is responsible for research on China economy at the Centre of Policy Studies. She has led and completed many research projects which cover various economic issues in China.

In this episode we speak Associate Professor Debra Smith about violent extremism in the context of coronavirus. What are some of the challenges associated with violent extremism during this current pandemic and what could be the future implications.

Debra Smith
Debra’s research focuses on questions of violent political extremism, social conflict and social change. She co-leads the Applied Security Science Partnership (ASSP) that includes embedded researchers and practitioners from Victoria University, Victoria Police, Defence Science Technology, and community leadership groups. The purpose of the ASSP is to build robust evidence on behavioural indicators of all forms of violent extremism, and to translate this evidence into frontline practitioner tools.
Debra provides training to state and federal policing agencies, education departments, and other frontline workers on Australia’s Countering Violent Extremism (CVE) early intervention and case management tools. She was appointed to the Expert Panel commissioned by the Victorian Government to undertake the independent review of effective case management and information sharing barriers relevant to violent extremism (the CMIS Review).
She recently co-edited the first book on Australia’s contemporary far right and is currently co-authoring the book, International Terrorism and Counter Terrorism in the Australian Context.

Professor Alex Parker
Alex leads the Healthy and Inclusive Communities: Physical Activity, Sport and Culture research program within the Institute for Health and Sport (IHES) at Victoria University. Her research group aims to measure, understand, and promote exercise and physical activity to optimise mental wellbeing and prevent and treat mental illness.
Alex has extensive experience in leading clinical trials to promote physical activity in young people with mental health concerns. She is leading the Mental Health Research Consortium at VU which aims to address the high prevalence of physical and mental health concerns through behaviour and lifestyle interventions, including physical activity, sleep and nutrition. Alex is also a clinical psychologist with extensive clinical experience in youth mental health services.
