1 Samuel 20:18–19

Then Jonathan said to him, “Tomorrow is the new moon, and you will be missed, because your seat will be empty." (ESV)

There will come a day when you experience the loss of someone dear to you. It's important to remember these people who came before us and guided us in our walk with the Lord. While they're with us on earth, we must cherish the precious time we have with them - all while knowing that when they go home to be with our Lord, those secure in Christ can be confident of reunion in eternity.

John 15:13–14

Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends. [14] You are my friends if you do what I command you. (ESV)

Jesus tells us there is no greater love than to die for friends. That a stranger would put their own life on the line for the sake of their nation is certainly an instance of this kind of love. In the United States, Memorial Day is a reminder to give thanks for those who did just that for American citizens everywhere. Christians should be no strangers to the concept of vicarious sacrifice of one's own life. Our example of self-sacrifice is found in none other than Jesus Himself. There is no better way to give thanks for all the sacrifices that have been made for your benefit than to praise the Savior who Himself was sacrificed for us.

Nehemiah 1:4, 2:4

Prayer is a crucial element of a growing relationship with the Lord. Prayer happens both in planned and spontaneous moments. So make both a habit in your everyday walk.

Matthew 27:51

[51] And behold, the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom. And the earth shook, and the rocks were split. (ESV)

In the Old Testament, the “Holy of Holies” was considered the most holy place on earth - it was seen as off limits beyond specific circumstances. But when Jesus was crucified, the veil that separated this holy space was torn from top to bottom. The reality for the believer in Christ today is that we have access to God directly not because of our own holiness, but because of Jesus' sacrifice on our behalf. In Jesus, it is as if we can enter the Holy of Holies with the same merit Jesus would. He has made God's presence available to us any time, any place.

Isaiah 66:2

[2] All these things my hand has made,

and so all these things came to be,

declares the LORD.

But this is the one to whom I will look:

he who is humble and contrite in spirit

and trembles at my word. (ESV)

In the book of Isaiah, we learn that God looks favorably upon those who are humble, submissive in spirit, and respectful toward the Word of God. But those who are proud, defiant, and flippant toward God's decree will find no favor in the eyes of the Lord. We all need this reminder daily. Ultimately, we find grace and mercy from God for our inevitable failings in these areas in the person and work of Jesus. So turn to Him today, and away from the things that separate you the Lord.

Mark 9:24

"Immediately the father of the child cried out and said, 'I believe; help my unbelief!'" (ESV)

Sometimes, trusting in the Lord is easy. But when trials come, it will become more difficult. Having a lack of faith is no reason to shy away from the Lord, but all the more reason to run to Him. So no matter where you are, ask Him to cause you to trust Him even more today.

Numbers 14:24, 27:18

[24] But my servant Caleb, because he has a different spirit and has followed me fully, I will bring into the land into which he went, and his descendants shall possess it. (ESV)

Caleb and Joshua showed trust in the Lord when everyone around them doubted. Their faith in God and their trust that He would see the Israelites safely into the Promised Land went in the face of the naysayers around them. When the world tells you all is doomed, trust in the Lord the way Caleb and Joshua did.

Psalm 104:24

[24] O LORD, how manifold are your works!

In wisdom have you made them all;

the earth is full of your creatures. (ESV)

The Psalmist describes God's creation as reflecting His glory, as if the very splendor of the Lord is woven into the earth and its inhabitants. All of His creations cannot help but declare His wonderful attributes. Do you make your goal to join with the rest of creation in giving the Lord praise?

Romans 4:4-5

We know from scripture that nobody can be saved by their own works, but only faith in the Lord Jesus. But scripture also puts great value on doing good things and avoiding evil acts. So what is the relationship between faith and works? Paul clarifies in Romans: we are saved by faith in Christ - and that faith is demonstrated by humble, heartfelt works to glorify the Lord.

Deuteronomy 6:15

When the Bible says God is “jealous,” it doesn’t mean the Lord is petty or selfish. Rather, He desires His people to be pure in their devotion to Him - the way a spouse rightly desires a pure relationship in marriage. Give Him your best, purest devotion and trust Him to be unwavering in His love toward you.
