In this episode, Joey and Ben discuss Network (1976), a great film about a television network. After that, they get on a soapbox about the state of the media and how all you sheeple need to wake up! They also watch a trailer for an upcoming reality television show that has team Joey advocating for no fun to be had. A little bit of a departure from a "normal" episode both of the guys will watch something new for next weeks episode. Get into it!
Episode Four! This week, the guys are talking about documentaries. Ben recommended "We Live in Public," a documentary about early Internet pioneer Josh Harris and his experiments with privacy loss in the Internet age. Joey recommended "The Parking Lot Movie," about parking lot attendants in Virginia. After their discussion, they watch a trailer for an HBO documentary about Andre the Giant. Get into it!
A revisit to last weeks highly controversial debate about "They Live," will Joey change his mind? Joey recommended "Hollow Knight" to Ben, and they chat about why its awesome. Followed by a discussion about the most impactful video games of their childhood. A video game trailer is watched and some more movies are recommended! Back to movies for the next episode. Get into it!
Episode two! Ben recommended John Carpenter's "They Live" starring Rowdy Roddy Piper. Joey really tells us what he thinks of this one. After that, the guys talk Wes Anderson films, listing them from best to least best (there are no bad Anderson films). A Wes Anderson trailer is watched and a video game is recommended! That's right, they move away from movies for a bit, but don't worry they will loop back around to them soon enough. Get into it!
It's official! Residual Culture launches with its first episode. Ben recommended John Woo's "Hard Boiled" (1992) before the episode, and Joey provides his thoughts. Then, they talk Coen Brothers' films, including their favorites (and least favorite) as well as what makes the Coen Bros so unique. A bad trailer is watched and a new movie is recommended. Get into it!
Residual Culture is a podcast out of the Reynolds School of Journalism produced and edited by Joey Lovato and Ben Birkinbine. Joey is a student at the Reynolds School and Ben is an assistant professor of Media Studies. Together their knowledge spans a wide range of media artifacts, from movies and TV to video games and music. This podcast is them exploring, arguing, and hopefully better understanding those topics.
Here is the trailer for Residual Culture where Joey and Ben breakdown what they are going to be talking about during the podcast, and giving a little behind the scenes of how the podcast was conceived.
