      • Online Protective Order Requests in Illinois

On January 1, 2023, some changes in Illinois policy went into effect to help further protect victims of domestic violence who are seeking protective, or restraining, orders against their abusers.

Senate Bill 03667 amends the Code of Criminal Procedure of 1963, the Stalking No Contact Order Act, the Civil No Contact Order Act, and the Illinois Domestic Violence Act of 1986 to allow victims who are seeking a protective order to now be able to file the request online.  While there are some caveats, including the ability to file online only in counties in Illinois that have over 250,000 residents, this new change was implemented to allow victims to file an order without having to face their abuser.

Attorneys Gwendolyn J. Sterk and Joneice S. Atchison of Sterk Family Law Group, P.C. sit down to discuss the changes that went into effect, how a victim can file a request, and other available remedies for victims to receive support.

      • What is the value of a free legal consultation with a family law attorney?

In the event that a life circumstance has you thinking about contacting a family law attorney, you likely may already feel overwhelmed, nervous, and confused.  Making the decision to speak with an attorney can seem frightening, but it doesn't always need to be.

In our latest podcast, family law Attorney Gwendolyn J. Sterk speaks with Elizabeth A. Briick about the consultation process and how it can be helpful to alleviate some of the questions one may have.  The true value of a free consultation is knowledge, and knowledge is power. This power comes in the form of an understanding of your current options and the capability to make an educated decision. The ultimate decision may be to move forward with legal action or it may be to reconcile the matter at home. Either way, the decision can be made with clarity.

      • Reconnecting Parent-Child Relationships Through Reunification Therapy

In many instances, a family law court may appoint what is called a reunification therapist in your legal case.

Reunification therapy is a form of family therapy that has the goal of working on the dynamics between a parent and child to be able to reunite their relationship.  This form of therapy strives to help the parties develop healthy communication and to create bonds, and heal injuries in the relationship.

        • Who are the participants?
        • What is the role of the reunification therapist?
        • What is the goal of reunification therapy?
        • Is there a critical need for both parents to be involved?
        • Does the favored parent have to give the child emotional permission to pursue reunification?
        • What is gatekeeping?
        • What are some examples of alienating behaviors?
        • What approach should a rejected parent take in the reunification process?
        • How do you address the past behaviors of the rejected parent? How do you break the ice?
        • Is it important that reunification therapy results in a business-like relationship between the parents?
        • Whitney McDaniel, LCPC, CFMHE, Certified Mediator, Parenting Coordinator, and Partner at Associates in Professional Counseling speaks with Attorney Gwendolyn J. Sterk to discuss these questions about reunification therapy, alienation, and parental gatekeeping.
