In this episode of the Respectfully hair podcast, Dove Palmer shares his story, style and music choices with Nicky Pope!
Dove Palmer and Nicky PopeRespectfully moved our usual recording process to join Dove live on his houseboat moored in East London at the Limehouse basin. We were intrigued by what the homely surroundings tell us about this world-renowned educator. In a lively and thoughtful conversation, Dove shared his take on pop culture, music and style icons and how this informs his hairdressing.
The wheelhouse on Dove's boatHair for Curious CatsDove became a hairdresser in his 20s, and quickly joined Vidal Sassoon where he became an educator. And a first-class one at that. Focussing on precision cutting techniques, he travels widely to share his knowledge and stills finds the training process as rewarding today as ever.
The living-music spaceIn our podcast you'll hear Dove explain what he sees as interesting and uplifting about hairdressing today. We asked him about his vinyl collection and enjoyed hearing plans for the Curious Cats Sunday Service gathering he is hosting over the Summer. He describes it as ‘hair for those that love to learn'.
Artwork gives a nod to Dove's hairdressingTo follow Dove, you can find him on his Instagram platform – where he often shares great Tips For Curious Cats! Don't forget to DM him if you're interested in the Sunday Service, too.

Frank Brormann is an entrepreneur with a fabulous heritage career in hairdressing. He is a German salon-owner and stylist who has a broad experience of working in different European countries, and trained with the likes of Patrick Cameron. Despite his fabulous start and quick success in the industry, Frank always felt there was ‘more to discover'. And indeed he was right!
Always driven and ambitious, Frank's quest for ‘more has led him to discover a new way of cutting hair. The Calligraphy Cut. He talks to the host of the Respectfully podcast, Nicky Pope, to explain Calligraphy Cut – both a technique and a hair tool in the form of a Calligraphy pen.
Frank BrormanCalligraphy CutDuring the conversation, Frank shares both how he conceived the Calligraphy Pen, and how it is used to best effect. This is essentially a simple idea: emulating the way florist trim the stems of flowers by cutting them on a slant so there is a larger surface area of the cut stem to absorb water. But the effects on the hair are striking and impactful. A slant cut gives more scope to absorb moisture, but also adds to the reflective surface for light and shine, and to the flexibility of the hair strand and thus the way hair falls.
Calligraphy CutDon't talk our word for it – listen to this engaging conversation and we're sure you'll be inspired.
Go furtherExplore for yourself the potential of the Calligraphy Cut technique. You can subscribe to use the Calligraphy Pen and access a wealth of education and support. Frank has enlisted the support of industry professionals including Ky Wilson and Nicola Smythe and recently released a collection created by Anthony Mascolo. See more HERE
