God doesn’t simply give us a fresh start—He gives us a new identity, a new purpose, and a place in His unfolding story. The book of Ruth ultimately reminds us that our redemption in Christ is not the end of the story—it’s the beginning of a life shaped by Him and used for His glory.

Redemption doesn’t begin with our effort—it begins with a Redeemer who pursues us.

In Ruth 4:1–12, Boaz follows through on his promise to redeem Ruth, stepping forward when another redeemer refuses the cost. What unfolds at the city gate isn’t just a historical moment—it’s a picture of how God works to redeem His people. Boaz acts intentionally, personally, and publicly to secure Ruth’s future, showing both compassion and integrity as he fulfills the law.

But this story ultimately points beyond itself. In the same way that Ruth could not redeem her own situation, we cannot redeem ourselves from sin and spiritual death. The redemption we need must come from outside of us. Through the story of Boaz and Ruth, we catch a glimpse of the greater redemption God has provided through Jesus Christ. His redemption is intentional, personal, legally secured, and ultimately a blessing to all who receive it.

If God is truly sovereign over everything, does anything we do actually matter? In Ruth 3, we see how trusting in God’s sovereignty doesn’t make his people passive—it empowers them to act. As Naomi makes a plan, Ruth takes a bold step of faith, and Boaz responds with integrity and generosity, we’re reminded that confidence in God’s control frees us to live faithfully in the present.

This passage shows that trusting God’s sovereign love leads us to plan wisely, act boldly, serve others, and rest without trying to control every outcome. Even when we don’t fully understand what God is doing, we can trust that he is telling a bigger story—one that ultimately points to the redemption found in Jesus.

When our plans crumble, God's sovereign hand is still directing the outcome.

In Proverbs 21, Solomon (and others) gives short, punchy wisdom that shows us how to live under God’s hand: trust God’s sovereignty over our plans, choose righteousness over empty ritual, pursue diligence and integrity instead of quick gain, and cultivate peace in our relationships. This chapter isn't just theology — it's practical guidance for everyday life: prepare faithfully but hold plans loosely, prioritize justice and kindness over shows of religiosity, work with steady effort and honesty, and guard your speech so relationships flourish. Try reading a proverb a day (and pair it with a chapter of John) — or pick one verse from this chapter to let shape your week.

God’s kindness doesn’t just make us feel good — it makes the world feel right, because we were created to enjoy His kindness and reflect it to others. In Ruth 2:14–23, we see God’s kindness rippling outward through three people: Boaz shows humble, generous care in his workplace; Ruth shows loyal, self-forgetful love toward Naomi; and Naomi begins to “see” again—recognizing God’s mercy and mentoring Ruth with wisdom and direction. As the story closes, we’re invited not to simply “go and be kind,” but to rest in the kindness of God through Jesus—and then bend out that kindness into our work, relationships, and discipleship.
