While the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them, ‘What do you think about the Messiah? Whose son is he?’ “The son of David,“ they replied.
— Matthew 22:41–42
The Pharisees weren’t rejecting the idea of a Messiah—they wanted one. But only a Messiah who fit their expectations, upheld their authority, and served their agenda. A Savior who restored what they valued without demanding a new way of life.
Jesus presses them with a simple question that exposes the tension. If the Messiah is only David’s son, He’s manageable. Predictable. Useful. But if He’s also David’s Lord, surrender is required—and that’s where they refuse Him.
We do the same thing.
We want Jesus to affirm our plans, not redirect them. We want Him to bless our path, not challenge it. When following Jesus requires surrender—of control, comfort, habits, or pride—we resist. We justify. We delay. We spiritualize disobedience.
But Jesus never offered to support our story. He came to be Lord.
The real question isn’t whether we believe in Jesus.
It’s whether we’re willing to follow Him when His path confronts ours.
Reflection Question:
Where have you been asking Jesus to affirm your plans instead of surrendering to His direction?
Daily Challenge:
Identify one area where you’ve resisted Jesus’ leading. Release control and take one obedient step—no justification, no delay.
Prayer:
Lord, expose where I’ve tried to keep You small so I could stay in control. I don’t want a Jesus who serves my plans—I want to follow You wherever You lead. Amen.
