This Sunday we continue our progression through Galatians by focusing on a passage that appears to be more of an eruption of emotion for Paul. These verses are filled with passion as Paul fights for his people against others seeking to woo the Galatians away from the true Gospel. After chapters of rational thought and carefully delineated arguments, Paul erupts in a type of holy rage. But what permeates throughout is a parental love for these newborn Christians. I look forward to preaching this sermon as we embark on the urgent business of making disciples.

Our tour through the letter to the Galatians continues this Sunday. We dive into a very important concept of Spiritual Adoption. We have dealt with this issue before, but learning about it within the detailed context of Galatians has certainly helped me gain a greater appreciation for understanding Spiritual Adoption.

This morning’s message continues Paul’s argument to the Galatians about how important faith is. God’s plan for us has always been about faith in him and how that faith changes our lives to desire to follow Him. We get sidetracked along the way, of course. We supplement, add, subtract, and divide up our individual paths to salvation or our understanding of the Gospel.

This Sunday we launch right back to where we were before the Advent season started. We continue our Galatian series called Faith and Freedom. This week’s theme: Got Faith? The issue we will be wrestling through is our default desire to get to God through our own religious busybodiness (not a word, I know). Religious busybodiness is a condition of those who think their rituals make us right with God. Religious busybodiness dulls the power of the Gospel, erodes the essence of grace, and distracts us from discipleship.

This message continues the narrative Paul shares with the Galatian churches about the precious message of the Gospel. Paul uses words to help us understand how we are made right with God by writing that we are justified by faith. We are saved by grace but justified by faith. Last Sunday we focused on grace, this week we focus on faith. How does faith justify us? What does ‘justify’ even mean? Why is it important for our everyday life if 'justification of faith' happens only once to the Christian?

These are important questions. They are not just questions to be answered by theologians in the realms of academia. These are questions that shape our daily life. Our faith matters. It matters for so much more than trusting particular lines of information. It matters because that information transforms our daily behavior.

The Letter to the Galatians remains a vital book for us in 2019. The Gospel is this precious message that can be so quickly distorted. We live in the age of 'Fake News', but there were some in the first century who also preached a type of fake news about the Gospel. Paul was resolute: the Gospel leads to freedom, not slavery. So this message focuses on how the Gospel provides freedom for us: total, resolute, full-throttled freedom! Don't be tied down to a fake news Gospel, but rather be set free by all that Christ did for you!

This Sunday we continue our series called Faith and Freedom by honing in on an argument Paul develops. Paul is eager to convince the Galatian churches he's writing to that the message he received was not invented by people or even given to him by church traditions, but was given to him straight from the top: Jesus Christ! His argument includes a brief testimony about Paul's pre and post-conversion experience. It's a fascinating passage, and also helps give shape to how we understand and even share our stories of faith.
