  • AI and Older Adults: Experience, Creativity, Work and Caregiving

Can AI help older adults turn decades of experience into a new advantage? And how is artificial intelligence changing the way we support older adults who need care?

In this Rethinking Aging Club podcast, recorded September 24, 2026, we explored AI across the full spectrum of aging, from active older adults using new technology to expand their creativity, productivity, and opportunities at work to caregivers and senior living professionals using AI to improve the quality of care.

Our guests were Kyle Shannon, co-founder of AI Salon and creator of The Great Repurpose, and Benjamin Surmi, social gerontologist and VP of Senior Living at Arvo. They joined host Linda Sherman and co-hosts Debbie Howard and Ray Gordon for a lively discussion about the opportunities, challenges, and human skills that matter most in an AI-powered world.

This episode was part of our Future of Work series.

    Highlights from the Conversation

AI as a leveler for older adults in the workforce

For years, we've heard about the advantages of digital natives. But does being comfortable with technology outweigh decades of experience, judgment, and wisdom? Kyle, Debbie, and Ray explored how AI could give experienced professionals new ways to apply their knowledge, evaluate results, and remain competitive. Kyle shared examples of Boomers and Gen Xers embracing AI to launch creative projects, change careers, and discover new possibilities.

The Great Repurpose: Your value is more than your tasks

Kyle introduced The Great Repurpose, his initiative exploring how AI is transforming work and our understanding of personal value. Rather than competing with machines that can increasingly perform specialized tasks, he encouraged people to identify their unique strengths, interests, and purpose—and use AI to amplify them.

Kyle also introduced the idea of "aching gaps" - things we've always wanted to do but lacked the skills, tools, or resources to accomplish. He explained how AI was making many of those ambitions newly accessible.

Human judgment, taste, and relationships still matter

As AI makes technical execution easier, what distinguishes excellent work from mediocre output? The panel discussed the increasing importance of ideas, creativity, taste, judgment, and the ability to communicate a vision. Benjamin emphasized another essential human advantage: building relationships and trust. Debbie shared how her years of experience helped her recognize and improve AI-generated work.

    Transforming caregiver training with AI

Benjamin described how Arvo is rethinking workforce training in senior living. Instead of relying on passive videos and compliance quizzes, Arvo is developing AI-supported, personalized coaching that helps frontline workers practice real-world situations, receive feedback, and build practical skills.

The discussion explored interactive avatars, multilingual learning, and the potential for caregivers to practice challenging situations privately before encountering them on the job. Benjamin distinguished what Arvo was doing at the time of the recording from its longer-term vision for realistic simulations involving older adults.

AI applications in senior living and family caregiving

Benjamin shared examples of AI already entering senior living operations, including August Health, which uses AI to support care planning and help staff quickly understand residents' needs, and Teton AI, which uses sensors and AI analysis to identify potential safety risks.

The conversation also covered emerging AI tools designed to help family caregivers find guidance, particularly when supporting someone living with dementia.

You don't need to be a technical expert to use AI effectively

One of the most practical messages from Kyle and Benjamin was that effective AI use didn't necessarily require elaborate prompts. Both favored natural conversation, giving AI relevant context, explaining what you want, and refining the results.

Kyle recommended approaching AI as a collaborative partner rather than a vending machine for answers. He also discussed the importance of helping AI understand who you are, what you value, and what you're trying to accomplish. Voice conversations were another way to make AI increasingly accessible.

Throughout the discussion, the panel acknowledged AI's limitations, including inaccurate or mediocre results and concerns about privacy and trust. They emphasized that human oversight remained essential.

  • Living Choices with NUUage Coliving, Furnished Finder and WheelPad L3C

Linda Sherman introduced our August 20, 2026 Rethinking Aging Club Podcast Living Choices topic: Where and how we live becomes an increasingly important question as we age. Most of us want to remain independent and in control of those decisions, yet many homes aren't designed for changing mobility needs, housing costs are rising, and many older adults - especially women - live alone. In this episode, we explored three very different approaches that expand our living choices: intentional coliving, longer-term furnished housing, and accessible living spaces that can be added to an existing home.

Elizabeth White discussed the concept of "Golden Girls" style co-living to combat loneliness and financial precarity among older women. She highlights the importance of psychological readiness for shared living and advocates for developers to create more "missing middle" housing options. Ray Gordon introduced a potential hurdle with current zoning regulations that do not account for high-density or non-traditional residential units.

Cami Nariño explained how Furnished Finder serves as a marketplace for furnished rentals of 30 days or more, catering to relocating families and traveling healthcare professionals. The platform allows landlords, many of whom are over 55, to turn unused spaces like guest houses or basements into income-producing assets. Unlike other platforms, Furnished Finder utilizes a yearly listing fee rather than per-booking commissions, facilitating direct negotiation between users. Cami leads a fully remote global team of 200+, including an operations team in Colombia that's 90% women, many of whom have found new pathways into tech through her leadership.

Julie Lineberger explained how the WheelPad pads are dignified alternatives to skilled nursing or assisted living, allowing families to stay together. We learned how their L3C (low-profit limited liability company) status works. There are different models, including a suite pad for bedroom/bathroom setups and a studio pad that includes a kitchenette. Six-month minimum lease or purchase with buyback available. Based in Vermont.

  • Wellness and Longevity with Miray Tayfun, Liz Seegert and Jon Warner

August is National Wellness Month. Our discussion focused on a new era of wellness with possibilities to understand our health in real time, identify risks before symptoms appear, and benefit from artificial intelligence, though of course challenges still face us.

Miray Tayfun, CEO of Vivoo, introduced their at-home health platform, which offers rapid tests and software for analyzing results, emphasizing privacy and integration with Apple Health and other services. New from Vivoo is a plug-and-play device that you can attach to your toilet. It has an optical sensor that allows your urine to flow through the device and measure your urine density to give you information about your hydration - and later this year pH markers - sending data to your mobile phone, which can also be very valuable in geriatric care.

Health journalist Liz Seegert pointed out the challenges of fragmented healthcare, particularly for women and older adults. “When we talk about wellness, we have to understand that wellness is not just yoga and green smoothies and herbal tea. It's whether you can get your doctor to take your symptoms seriously, whether you can coordinate care across multiple specialists without losing your mind, whether you have time to schedule your own mammogram while you're also scheduling your mother's cardiology follow-up."

John Warner discussed the longevity gap and the need for better care coordination, especially in affordable housing. We have 4.1 million people aged 63 or older in affordable housing in the U.S. CareAxis is building care coordination. He emphasized that for all levels of wealth, healthy longevity requires evolving from reactive healthcare to personalized, proactive health management.

Water is great but there ARE alternate sources. A few answers from a recent quiz
    https://www.nytimes.com/2026/07/26/well/water-hydration-quiz.html
Coffee is inherently dehydrating - False
“Coffee is mostly water and counts toward daily hydration. You may pee more if you drink a lot of it, but this is because of the volume of liquids being consumed, not its diuretic properties, said Dr. Verbalis.”

You can get a good amount of water just from the food you eat - True
“About 20 percent of your total daily water intake comes from foods, particularly fruits and vegetables, Dr. Muñoz said. Cucumber, iceberg lettuce, celery and watermelon are especially water-rich, as are soups and yogurt, she added. The rest should come from sipping water, tea, coffee, seltzer or other nonalcoholic drinks with meals or throughout the day, said Dr. Joseph G. Verbalis, chief of the division of endocrinology and metabolism at Georgetown University who researches water metabolism.”

A nonalcoholic beer can actually be a source of hydration - True
“Alcohol is generally dehydrating. It suppresses ADH, the hormone that regulates bodily fluids, causing you to produce large amounts of urine, Dr. Kavouras said, so you pee a lot, and that can lead to dehydration. This is why it’s recommended to sip water with alcoholic drinks. Or to drink water before bedtime if you’ve had alcohol, he said.Nonalcoholic beer or booze won’t have these effects, and can contribute to overall hydration, Dr. Muñoz said.”

  • Dementia and Brain Health with JuneBrain, Crdl and U The Mind

June is Alzheimer’s and Brain (Health) Awareness Month. New diagnostics, therapies, AI-powered tools and caregiver support solutions are transforming what's possible for people living with dementia and for the families who care for them. Our guests today are part of that exciting movement.

Sam Scott introduced a portable retinal imaging OCT (Optical Coherence Tomography) device called Neuro-i SS-OCT for early detection and monitoring of neurodegenerative and optical diseases, including Alzheimer’s Disease. It is pre-FDA approval. Supported by AI and automation, it is easy to use and collect data. Sam mentioned the potential for OCT in retail optical chains and big box pharmacies.

Ger Schuivens presented Crdl, a beautiful wood device for enhancing human connection, expression and wellbeing through music and touch for dementia patients who have lost the majority of their communication capabilities. It can be used with two people, a circle or a chain of 200 people holding hands. Created in the Netherlands, Eugeria is the distributor in the USA and Canada. Priced at $9,500 for memory care communities and individuals.

Mo Abouelsoud explained in delightfully plain language his company's non-invasive electrical stimulation headband, which showed significant improvements in Alzheimer's patients in a clinical study published in 2024. U: The Mind also has clinically studied versions for Parkinson's and coming soon calming for dogs. Their NeuroEdge is a consumer-grade wellness device built on their neurostimulation platform. Designed for everyday focus, clarity, and cognitive performance at home priced at $350.

  • Social Connection and Mental Health

Our May 28th, 2026, our episode focused on social isolation and its impact on mental health, particularly among older adults. May is Mental Health Awareness Month. Providing an overview, Maureen Feldman noted that one in three older adults reports feeling lonely, with loneliness linked to higher rates of depression, anxiety, and cognitive decline. Social disconnection does not just affect older adults; younger generations are struggling with this as well. Maureen also pointed out the social isolation suffered by family caregivers. “Humans are wired for connection."

Kyle Rand explained Rendever's use of virtual reality to combat social isolation, noting a 62% reduction in depression in dementia patients and a 67% reduction in caregiver burden. Kyle noted that the one stat that really sticks with people is that social isolation is as detrimental to one's health as smoking 15 cigarettes per day. Rendever emphasizes the benefits of positive shared experiences to be the foundation of human connection.

Dana Griffin introduced Eldera.ai, which pairs adults over the age of 60 with young people, providing benefits to both sides of the pair, mental and physical health and fostering intergenerational relationships. “We believe (people over 60) are the holders of our humanity, they are the last generation who grew up without technology and can truly understand human values and can share human values.” “We have a community of these people all over the country who support each other in being better mentors, and because they are so values aligned, being part of Eldera and giving their time and wisdom to the next generation -  They started forming friendships and going on walks and creating micro support circles so they can all age in place successfully. But we don't do this through care, we do this through purpose and through meaning."

Recorded on May 28, 2026, this episode is part of our Social Isolation and Mental Health Series. Speakers are listed in their order of appearance.

  • Thine AI Companion, Care2U Mobile Urgent Care, Lunalino Home

Our May 14, 2026 Project Updates episode featured Care2U Mobile Urgent Care, Thine AI Companion and Lunalino Home.

Lon Hecht, CEO of Care2You, explained their innovative model, which replaces ER visits and hospitalizations with in-home care. The model involves deploying clinicians like physician assistants, nurse practitioners, or paramedics to the home, accompanied by ER or hospitalist physicians via telehealth to patients' homes within 2-4 hours. Care2You treats complex medical needs, including pneumonia and congestive heart failure, COPD, infections, and dehydration (not immediately life threatening like heart attacks and head injuries), at a third of the cost of hospital care. We discussed the challenges and costs of using this model to solve the needs of rural care. Care2U also serves Senior Living communities.

King Lunalilo Trust provides long-term care and adult day care at Lunalino Home, as well as meal delivery services, grounded in Hawaiian culture and values. CEO Keola Dean described how Lunalino Home is able to provide unique entertainment and activities donated by a community that highly respects King Lunalino, who is fondly remembered as a progressive monarch.

Pratyush Rai described the concept of Thine, an AI platform designed to understand people with deeper context through conversations and other digital interactions. Thine was the next step after Foyer’s Merlin.

Pratyush highlighted the benefits of Thine for both young people and older adults, helping to manage information and improve productivity.

Linda Sherman has been beta testing Thine since May 1st and found it is unique in learning ambiently and piecing together conversations and environments. Thine can perform directed AI agent types of tasks when you connect it to your Google Drive and gmail. It also works with Slack. She has recently given her Thine a name - Richard - inspired by Linda’s relationship with her friend Richard Sherman who wrote the original music in our podcast intro and outro called Serenity.

Recorded on May 14, 2026, this episode is part of our Project Updates Series. Speakers are listed in their order of appearance.
