  • Lux Radio Theater – Wizard of Oz. 501225 (retro606)
Do I really need to write show notes on this one? Maybe I should just let listeners of the podcast, and readers of the blog fill in the comments with favorite Wizard of Oz moments.
Typically, Lux Radio Theater tried to use the original cast, to enact a script based on their hit film. When the cast wasn’t available, stock actors filled in. In today’s feature, Judy Garland is the only one to receive credit, but the Cowardly Lion is veteran actor, Ed Macks. Songs from the film sprinkle the action, as Dorothy Gale is whisked out of Kansas, and into a fantasy world full of Munchkins, Wicked Witches, and a journey to Oz, with her new found friends, the Scarecrow, Tin Man, and Lion.
    Bonus Track

    * Keith clarifies a slight dispute raised by a Twitter follower about when Lux Radio Theater first aired… the listener wins! But the only time the Wizard of Oz was ever performed was the one we feature today.

    Here’s my official Amazon description:

Comparing well known bible passages, and developing a chain of events that walk through the activities surrounding the birth of Jesus, this short edition offers a glimpse of the times. But what about the people, customs, or events that don’t seem to fit? Was there really a star? Were the shepherds and wisemen together at the manger? What was it like to travel from Nazareth to Bethlehem compared to today? Archeology, astronomy, and some help from the web offers interesting insights as well.

Well? Go check it out. I’ll be looking forward to hearing your response in your review.

  • Dragnet – Big Car. ep77, 501130
Robbery detail. Food markets are being held up by a well dressed bandit.
Audio quality is on the low end of good.
Walking through police headquarters, Joe and Ben light up as they await their next assignment. Pollard is a self confessed burglar who turns himself in. The interrogation plods on to draw out all the details in his operations. As detailed as he is, the detectives trip him up. He’s not their man.
Hitting the street, Joe is soon gathering details from another market owner. Mr Talbot is calm as he outlines the events with the well dressed, briefcase toting robber. A clue comes when the get away car is described. A fire engine red, new Pontiac.
The owner of the car is identified, and is naturally evasive, but a briefcase and revolver are found. Where’s the friend who borrowed the car? The robberies continue as relentless as ever.
A stakeout on the suspects hotel is in place, and the neighborhood canvassed, but no sign of the robber has turned up. With another robbery, Joe is told the red car was spotted with an accomplice at the wheel, to act as the get away driver. Visiting an amusement park, Joe and Ben are directed to the merry go round worker, and the shooting gallery to get a lead on their man. A solid connection is made, stakeouts beefed up, and the waiting game continues. Gunplay, a chase on foot, but they have the wrong man. Walking back to police headquarters Ben feels the affects of too many hot dogs and too much popcorn. While they wait., the phone lines report the news that the search is over.

Our heroes are surrounded by the Inkapoo Paper Indians and are threatened with execution after breaking their laws.
It’s looking bad for Jim, Judy, and the Cinnamon Bear.
Suspense builds, but we haven’t seen the last of the Crazy Quilt Dragon just yet. Just when the Silver Star is almost within reach, a new obstacle arises in the form of a blue polka dot whale.
Note (Wikipedia): Glanville Heisch not only wrote the script, he also penned most of the lyrics to the songs, which were sung by the Paul Taylor Quartet. The popularity of the series never wavered. In the mid 1980s, its fan club, the Cinnamon Bear Brigade, had over 400 members, making it larger than most OTR clubs.
