Aviation pioneer and first female Shuttle Commander, Col. Eileen Collins, recounts tales from her book, “Through the Glass Ceiling to the Stars”, about her journey growing up in Elmira, NY; flying heavy aircraft in the Air Force; Test Pilot School, and her eventual command of one of the most complex and demanding Space Shuttle missions ever.
Listen to her recount her leadership lessons learned as she was challenged to navigate an intense emotionally-charged atmosphere post Columbia, where trust was lacking and conversations were often heated. Â Working through several near misses which could have cost the lives of the crew, Eileen succeeded in accomplishing all mission objectives and gently landed Space Shuttle Discovery on the dry lakebed at Edwards Air Force Base in California on Aug. 9, 2005.
