  • Reunion Roadmap Midrash: Teshuva and Home

Do we ever stop to think about the words we learned in our Christian background? Those who grew up in the church are familiar with words like redemption, salvation, and repentance, but do we know what those words mean? That's what Barry Phillips and David Jones talk about in this discussion. There are deep meanings to these words, all rooted in scripture, which speak to an identity and destiny that only begins with our decision to follow Messiah Yeshua.

  • Reunion Roadmap Midrash: Yosef and Unity

What was the reason the whole nation of Israel - meaning both Houses of Israel and all twelve tribes - were conquered, exiled, and scattered to every nation on earth? We can name several issues, such as idolatry, wickedness, and unrighteousness, with all the symptomatic sins associated with those things. But what about divisiveness?

Psalm 133 speaks of the high priority God places on His people dwelling together in unity. Paul writes about that in Romans 12, exhorting Yeshua's followers to live at peace with others. So, then, why don't we live at peace with our brothers and sisters in the faith? Is that a reason the nation of Israel remains divided and scattered?

Barry Phillips and David Jones investigate these questions in the context of the Torah Awakening among Christians. If it really is the restoration of the House of Joseph and the beginning of reconciliation with Judah, then what can we do to help that process - or at least not hinder it?

  • Israel Connections: Susanne Ratcliffe - Stones of Wrath, The Tapestry

Fiction may be the most powerful kind of literature. Things that seem unbelievable and outlandish in real life become acceptable and even plausible in a well-written story. This is especially so when such things are woven into the fabric of a novel grounded in historical fact and filled with fascinating characters developed from real people. That’s exactly the kind of fiction Susanne Ratcliffe writes.

Susanne has just published her first novel, Stones of Wrath: The Tapestry. This is the first of a historical fiction series with its roots in the wanderings of Israel’s Ten Tribes – particularly the Tribe of Dan. In her first novel, Susanne introduces us to a mysterious artefact dating to Israel’s Exodus from Egypt, and a small group of faithful Hebrews who have safeguarded the artefact through the ages. This novel is set in England and Denmark in World War I, but its roots extend back through time to Mount Sinai, and forward to Israel’s complete restoration. In this interview, Susanne tells us what inspired her to write about the Ten Tribes, and how this inspiration grew into a sweeping saga that incorporates centuries of academic research in to the migrations of the Tribes, as well as her own family history.

At the most basic level, Stones of Wrath is a historical fiction series built on the identity of many peoples whose roots include an Israelite, or Hebrew, connection. That reality is what makes the Bible even more relevant to us all because it is our collective history that we share with the Jewish people of Israel.

  • Israel Connections: Gidon Ariel - In Search of Bridge Builders

What is the best way to improve Jewish-Christian relations? Gidon Ariel has some excellent ideas about that based on his years of experience as founder and CEO of Root Source, an organization dedicated to promoting respectful relationships between pro-Israel Christians and Jews.

This is a crucial topic for everyone who loves Israel, especially in this time of escalating anti-Jewish sentiment and actions around the world. Opposition to Israel and the Jewish people didn't start with the current war in Gaza, but the war has sparked a resurgence of anti-Semitism to the point that Jewish communities outside Israel no longer feel safe. That is the starting point of our conversation, which took place on the very day the Israel Defense Forces began the long-awaited offensive into the last Hamas stronghold in Rafah.

Listen as Gidon shares his perspective on the present war, the anti-Israel protests in America and elsewhere, the future of Israel, and his hopes for stronger Jewish-Christian relations through the efforts of bridge-building pioneers on both sides.

A key resource for those who would like to cultivate friendships between Christians and Jews should take a look at Bridge Builders: Top Activists in Christian-Jewish Relations. That is one of many resources available through Root Source. Visit https://root-source.com/ and connect!

  • Susanne Ratcliffe: Stones of Wrath - Israel's Tribes in Cultural Context, part 3

What is the historical basis for the migration of Israel’s tribes into Europe – and especially the migrations of Dan into Denmark, the country that bears the tribe’s name? That premise is foundational to Susanne Ratcliffe’s novel, Stones of Wrath: The Tapestry. In this final segment of our interview, Susanne discusses what is known about the migrations of the Ten Tribes, and how the story she weaves is grounded in archaeology, historical record, and cultural memory extending back many centuries.

At the most basic level, Stones of Wrath is a historical fiction series built on the identity of many peoples whose roots include an Israelite, or Hebrew, connection. That reality is what makes the Bible even more relevant to us all because it is our collective history that we share with the Jewish people of Israel. We hear something of this in the music of House of Aaron and Laura Metzing. It’s also an important component in the discussion by Barry Phillips and David Jones that they call, “Honey on the Ground.”

  • Susanne Ratcliffe: Stones of Wrath - Israel's Tribes in Cultural Context, part 2

Authors might describe the process of writing as the process of sharing with their readers the inspiration that moved them to write. Often that inspiration comes from personal experience. The best novels, for example, reflect the author's life journey. That is exactly what we find in Stones of Wrath: The Tapestry, Susanne Ratcliffe's debut novel developed around the theme of Israel's wandering tribes and their descendants in modern Europe. In this second part of our conversation, Susanne tells us her story, which includes details about her family roots in Australia and England. Readers who are captivated by her historical fiction will find echoes of her family history in her characters and the action of the novel. Those who have not yet read Stones of Wrath: The Tapestry will hear in Susanne's story a preview of what they will find in the book.

A major feature of Susanne's writing is the Providence of God. Her characters who have a relationship with the Almighty live in expectation of His Providence, especially in troubled times. Teshuva and Will Spires touch on God's Providence in their songs about His promises, and Barry Phillip and David Jones provide scriptural context for it in a two-part conversation they call, "Honey on the Ground."

In this three-part interview, Susanne tells us what inspired her to write about the Ten Tribes, and how this inspiration grew into a sweeping saga that incorporates centuries of academic research in to the migrations of the Tribes, as well as her own family history.

The service Susanne has done for us all is to connect the biblical story of Israel - including God's promises about the restoration and reconciliation of Israel and Judah - with our present reality. The Bible is real and relevant to us, just as our David Jones and Barry Phillips explain in their midrash, "When YHVH Calls Your Name." That is why we can have hope for the future, as we hear in the music of Teshuva and Solomon Lopez.

  • Reunion Roadmap Midrash: Daniel and Exile

If we are waiting for Messiah's return, then the Messianic Kingdom is not completely established on earth. We have the Kingdom within us, and we carry it wherever we go, but we're still living in the kingdoms of this world. In a sense, we are in exile, just like our Jewish brethren who are also waiting on the revelation of Messiah's Kingdom. That's why Barry Phillips and David Jones start their conversation by looking at the experience of Daniel and the exiles of Judah. How did they remain true to their identity, their values, and their God? What lessons can we draw from those ancient Hebrew exiles that apply to our present reality?

  • Israel Connections: Sister Naomi - The Nations Come to Israel

This very special interview took place in Jerusalem in 2018, during the 70th Anniversary Independence Day Celebration (Yom Ha’atzmaut) of the modern Jewish State of Israel. It was there that we met Naomi, a native of Guyana who currently resides in Great Britain. Her lineage is a “soup mix” of Ethiopian Jewish, Chinese, Irish, and elements from other parts of Africa. She also knows her ancestry is from the tribe of Dan, and that is just one of Naomi's intimate connections with the nation of Israel. You will be challenged and drawn to this story of this mighty woman of the Most High!

  • Reunion Roadmap Midrash: Hope and Pain

Why do bad things happen to good people? We all ask that question because it's a painful part of our shared human experience. Barry Phillips and David Jones wrestle with that reality in this conversation that draws from the lives of Job and Paul to find reasons for hope in the midst of our pain.
