  • Reunion Roadmap Midrash: Life of Worship

What is the definition of worship? We're supposed to worship our God, but do we have to have certain components like music and dance to make it "legitimate" worship? Are acts of kindness considered worship? These are questions Barry Phillips and David Jones consider in their conversation about a life of worship.

  • Reunion Roadmap Midrash: Reflections of Av

What is restoration? How do we achieve it?
Is it true that the way we view history shapes how we walk out our future? If it is true, then we would be wise to learn about our past - the bad things as well as the good.
This is the framework of the conversation Barry Phillips and David Jones share about the 9th of Av - the Fast of the Fifth Month mentioned in Zechariah 8:19. Our Jewish brethren have observed this fast for many centuries. It might be good to learn why - especially if we would like to see healing, reconciliation, and restoration to these two halves of God's Covenant People.

  • Reunion Roadmap Midrash: Grace

What do you know about grace? Is it an undeserved gift we receive, or something that requires action? Or is it something that empowers us to take action? These are among the questions Barry Phillips and David Jones ask in their conversation about one of those foundational elements of our faith walk that we probably don't understand very well.

  • Reunion Roadmap Midrash: Context

Context is everything when it comes to understanding the scriptures. But what exactly is context? Is it simply reading an entire chapter, or studying related passages? That helps, but a serious contextual study takes into account the historical, linguistic, and cultural context surrounding the text. That's what Frank Houtz and David Jones explain in this thought-provoking conversation.

  • Revis Daggett: The Shadow of the Inquisition, part 5

There’s an interesting prophecy from Obadiah that is becoming relevant in our day:

"The exiles of Jerusalem, who are in Sepharad, will possess the cities of the Negev."
    Obadiah 1:20b

Sepharad is the Hebrew name for Spain, and the origin of the name for Sephardic Jews who trace their ancestry to Spain and Portugal. Many of those Jewish families have returned to Israel already, which makes this prophecy relevant, but there are others still in the Diaspora – many of whom have forgotten their Jewish heritage. Revis Daggett and others like her are working to change that! In this concluding part of our conversation, Revis shares her thoughts on how Hidden Jews and other “Hidden Hebrews” might be identified through cultural elements, and what this means for God’s plans to redeem all Israel and the nations.

Israel is invincible, of course, thanks to the Covenant of our redeeming God. However, there are ways the people of the Covenant have sabotaged themselves through the ages. That’s what Barry and David talk about in, “No Curse Against Israel.” What’s the answer? Remember who our God is, and who we are in Him, as we hear in the music of Laura Metzing and Lenny & Varda.

  • Revis Daggett: The Shadow of the Inquisition, part 4

Could it be that David Crockett was fighting against the Spanish Inquisition when he died at the Battle of the Alamo? Could the Texas Revolution have been a war against the long arm of the Inquisition? That may not be as strange as it sounds, considering the impact of the Inquisition in scattering the Jews of Spain to the New World and pursuing them to the furthest reaches of the Spanish Empire. Revis Daggett pulls that thread in this fourth part of our conversation about the Anusim (Hidden Jews) of the Americas.

The Spanish Inquisition took peace from the earth for many centuries. How do we cope with such terrors, both external and internal? There’s an answer in scripture, as Barry and David discuss in their midrash, “Return and Quiet.” We hear about that answer in the music of Solomon Lopez and Eved Adonai.

  • Revis Daggett: The Shadow of the Inquisition, part 3

Why is it that Mexican grandmothers don’t want to talk about their families’ history? Could it be that there is a Jewish element in their ancestry, and they are still afraid it might be discovered? This is one of the topics Revis Daggett addresses in the third part of our conversation about the Hidden Jews, or Anusim, of the Americas. As she explains, elements of Jewish and Hebraic identity have followed the exiles of Israel wherever they went – not only in the Hispanic world, but also in such unexpected places as Ireland.

The global scattering of Israel happened because God’s Covenant People weren’t acting like His people. That’s a problem we still have today, as Barry and David explain in their midrash, “Waterless Clouds.” The remedy is in remaining closely connected with our Creator, as we hear in Will Spires’ music inspired by the Psalms.

  • Revis Daggett: The Shadow of the Inquisition, part 2

Was Christopher Columbus Jewish? If so, did his voyage of discovery in 1492 have any connection to his Jewish identity? That’s one of the questions Revis Daggett addresses in this second part of our conversation. Revis has learned much about the Anusim (Hidden Jews) of the Americas, and in her learning, she has arrived at conclusions about the clues in our language and folklore that might point to a hidden Hebraic heritage of many peoples in this hemisphere!

We could say that the Anusim have been hidden in the shadows of Hispanic culture – or we could say they have been hidden in the shadow of the Almighty. What does it mean to be “In the Shadow”? Barry Philips and David Jones look into that in their midrash. The answers have a direct connection to the Hebraic identity of the New Covenant, which Rut Banks and Kelly Ferrari Mills sing about in our featured musical selections.

  • Revis Daggett: The Shadow of the Inquisition, part 1

Remember Cinderella? She’s a servant in her own home, oppressed by her adopted family, and unable to access her true identity as her father’s heir. We like that story because Cinderella finally steps into her noble identity and receives everything that has been kept from her. But it’s a fairy tale, right? Nothing like that could ever happen in real life.

Revis Daggett can tell you that this is no fairy tale for the multitudes of Hidden Jews, or Anusim, of the Americas. As a native of West Texas, she began to encounter clues about these children of Israel whose ancestors hid their identity and fled to the New World in search of refuge from the holocaust of the Spanish Inquisition. In this five-part interview, Revis shares her journey of discovery, not only of the Jewish ancestry of her Hispanic neighbors, but of her own Anusim identity.

Torah is a key component in this journey to discover our Hebraic roots. Contrary to what we may have heard, keeping Torah doesn’t bring us into legalistic bondage, but reorients us to the Law of Freedom. That’s the topic of discussion in the midrash by Barry Phillips and David Jones. As we hear in the music of Dylan White and Will Spires, this is a matter of trust that matures us into a reflection of our Creator.

  • Reunion Roadmap Midrash: Restoring Sheep

We're supposed to help our brothers and sisters and neighbors, and Yeshua gave us some good teaching about who our neighbors and brethren are. We're also supposed to help the poor, the sick, and the suffering. But what do we do if those in need of help don't want to make any effort toward getting the relief, healing, or whatever else they need? Are we still obligated to help? That's a question Barry and David discuss in this midrash.
