Revived Thoughts

Basil was an early church father who pioneered monastic living. He lived in Asia and gave up pretty much all his belongings to encourage people to live a life of simpleness for God.

In his sermon, "To The Rich," he challenges the men of his time to repent and change their greedy hearts. He uses the Gospel to explain that too many are more interested in accumulation than in trusting in God.

Special thanks to Chris Ridgeway for narrating this sermon. Chris Ridgeway is a Christian leader who writes on church leadership, communications and technology and he is the co-host of the Device & Virtue podcast- where he argues about the wrongs and rights of everyday technology like smartphones—and how they  fit into the Christian Life.

He is also the host of the Device And Virtue podcast which helps pastors and church workers learn to use technology in a way that glorifies God.

George Whitefield is one of the most famous preachers of all time. Born in England he traveled across the early colonial America, Scotland, and Britain proclaiming the Gospel to giant crowds.

His sermon, "How To Listen To Sermons," asks a basic question that many have not considered. What is the proper way to listen to sermons and how should we treat our preachers?

Special thanks to Scott Woodruff for narrating this sermon. He served in the army as an infantryman and is now married with two daughters. He is currently a student at Grand Canyon University pursuing his master's in divinity. He looks forward to a full time career in ministry or as a biblical counselor.

Samuel Davies was a preacher in Colonial America who had a profound impact on American history. Martin Lloyd Jones described him as "the greatest preacher America ever produced."

His sermon, "Ingratitude To God," challenges us to look at the sin of ingratitude and realize that it is truly a terrible sin. That in fact, we are all guilty of this sin and have not given God the respect that is due to Him.

Special thanks to Mark Andrews for narrating this episode of Revived Thoughts. Special thanks to Mark Andrews for being the speaker on this episode of Revived Thoughts. He is an adult fellowship teacher at Shawnee Bible Church.

Brand NEW PODCAST!

(Details below the episode description)

Charles Spurgeon, "Prince Of Preachers," preached during the 1800s in England. In this episode we take a look at his conversion during a snowstorm, in a way that would break pretty much every rule that modern churches observe about guests in church.

His sermon, "What The Church Lacks," challenges us to first ask God to revive our hearts, and then to beg God to revive His church. He explains that this is the reason we do not see the fruit of a Christian people and his words are as relevant today as ever.

Special thanks to Dave Wakefield for narrating this episode of Revived Thoughts.

Robert Murray M'Cheyne was a minister in Scotland from 1835-1843. Despite only serving for a handful of years his life made a huge impact. From his trip to Jerusalem to his Bible reading plan this 29 year old left a mark on history.

His sermon, "Do What You Can," reminds us that our time is short and we are to spend our years on Earth doing what we can for God. What makes it especially challenging is that it comes from a man who was only 29 when he died and he spent his time on Earth "Doing all that he could."

Special thanks to Wayne Geiger. Wayne Geiger is the pastor of First Baptist Grain Valley, MO and an Adjunct Professor of Communication. His site is waynegeiger.com

C.I. Scofield is a controversial and famous preacher who lived in the 1800s. His life story starts out very rough as a confederate soldier, a corrupt lawyer, and an alcoholic who destroys his own private practice and his family. His story changes completely when a friend tells him about Christ.

His sermon, "The Deity Of Christ," comes across as one part apologetic work and another part invitation to meet the same history changing Christ that Scofield met. It is a passionate defense of the person of Christ, whom our faith rests on.

Special thanks to Jonathan Clauson. Jonathan Clauson started with Clear Channel Radio in the '90s. Jonathan has worked in audio and marketing for 20 years. Credits include stints at EA Tiburon, Christianity Today, Christ and Pop Culture, and freelancing as voice talent for audio-books and podcast production services.

Origen is a church father born in 185. He has led a life of controversy, and Joel and I discuss some of these. But he also is one of the most passionate defenders of the faith that you have ever heard of.

His sermon from a series on Ezekiel goes after false teachers and challenges us all to make sure that we do not follow into heresy. He reminds us that the gift of discernment was given to us by God and should be used by believers.

Special thanks to Justin Becker. Justin is the editor and a voice actor for the podcast Biblical Chili. He has spoken several times on topics like Biblical End Time Prophecy and Biblical History but his favorite, that he has independently studied since 2003, is Young Earth Creation. Justin and his wife Tonya have two beautiful children together Jasper and Storye. One of his most burning questions that he has for the Lord when he returns is, 'What's up with the duck billed platypus?'

Another sermon from the past we've covered:

Chrysostom: The Power Of Man To Resist The Devil

Thomas Watson was a Puritan from the 1600s who suffered a lot in the name of Christ. Between multiple imprisonments, surviving the different laws passed against Puritans, and the loss of four children, his life was far from perfect.

Yet his sermon, "The Christian Joy," explains the importance of finding joy in our walk with God. A man who did not live a life that we would measure as "good" tells us about Joy.

Special thanks to Tom Sullivan. Tom recently retired from the Postal Service where he has worked since 1994. He began narrating sermons in December of 1985 for the Chapel Library when it was in Venice, FL. He teaches American Church History and The Theology of Christian Experience. He has lived in Grand Rapids, MI for 31 years and has been a Reformed Baptist since 1984.

John Calvin is one of the most famous figures of the Reformation. Although often remembered for the great deeds he did in Geneva, Troy and Joel take a look at his life in his younger years in this episode.

His sermon, "The Passion Of The Christ," takes a look at what Jesus Christ goes through on the cross and discusses the moment of the passion of Christ. Calvin's insights into that moment give that death on the cross a fresh look even for the most seasoned theologian.

Special thanks to Shawn Tomlin, a co-host on the Guys With Bibles Podcast.
