Nobody hands you a drawing or a call sheet for having a baby. I spent my career building shows from detailed schematics and suddenly I was climbing an eight-step ladder to hang a leko at thirty weeks pregnant with no backup plan but my own instincts. I talk through the thirty-six hours of labor that ended in an emergency c-section. My son Apollo was born screaming in outrage but I spent the next few weeks carrying a quiet certainty that my body had failed me. I also open up about the thick fog of postpartum depression. I couldn't soothe him or figure out breastfeeding so I strapped him to my chest and hiked the switchbacks up Multnomah Falls just fourteen days after surgery to see if my body still worked. It wasn't until I went walking in a damp Oregon forest with a group of exhausted mothers that I finally heard someone else admit they were drowning. Somebody has to say the true thing first.

The room was half-built when I walked up to the registration desk to shake my client's hand. Cables were still being run across the floor of the Governor Hotel. The banquet team was setting water glasses down the long tables. She looked at me and refused to take my hand.

"You're a woman, and you speak with an accent," she said. "What do you know about AV?".

Every late load-out and every show I had ever saved pressed into that one spot under her comment. I answered her by standing my ground and citing the 14-hour days I had actually lived. But the hardest part was who the doubt came from. I had braced my whole career for that line coming from a man. Hearing it from another woman opened a question I have never fully closed about how often we are handed the job of guarding the door, taught to police who looks technical until we do it to each other without noticing the hand that put us there.

The exhaustion is real.

If you have done this work in an industry that wasn't expecting you, you know the exact weight of spending your energy proving you belong in a room you have already earned your place in. The courage it took to walk into a space built without you in mind is the credential no one issued you and no one can take back. Every time you show up and do the work while someone questions whether you should be there, you hold a door open for the women coming up behind you. And some days, you just walk away tired.
