Prayer: I Will Trust the Lord
Using Psalm 56:3–4 as its foundation, this devotional invites believers to be honest about their fear while choosing to trust God anyway. David, a man after God’s own heart, openly admits, “When I am afraid, I put my trust in you.” His words remind us that even strong, faithful servants of God experience fear—that being afraid does not make us weak, less spiritual, or disqualified.

Prayer: The Joy of the Lord
Foundational Scripture: Psalm 51:10–12 (NLT)
In Psalm 51, we meet David at one of the lowest points of his life. Exposed by the prophet Nathan for his adultery with Bathsheba and the murder of her husband Uriah, David can no longer hide. This psalm is his raw, honest confession before God—a true picture of the sinner’s prayer.
In verse 10 he cries, “Create in me a clean heart, O God. Renew a loyal spirit within me.” Many of us stop at “create in me a clean heart,” but the heart of this verse is also in the plea, “renew a loyal (steadfast) spirit within me.” David isn’t only asking to be washed from his past; he’s asking for strength for his future. He is saying, “Lord, rebuild my inner strength so I can resist temptation. Restore the determination in me to walk faithfully with You.” We, too, must pray not only for forgiveness, but for a renewed, steadfast spirit that empowers us to stand against the sins and pressures that swirl around us.
In verse 11 David continues, “Do not banish me from your presence, and don’t take your Holy Spirit from me.” This is a prayer of dependence—an everyday cry of the heart that knows life, peace, and hope are found only in God’s presence.
Then we reach the center of this devotional in verse 12: “Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and make me willing to obey you.” This “joy of your salvation” is more than a feeling; it is a deep, unshakable confidence that God, in His mercy, receives the truly repentant heart. The joy of the Lord reminds us that even when we fail, we can, like David, come to God honestly, confess our sins, and know He will forgive and restore us.
In the joy of the Lord:

• We find strength to endure a sinful, hostile environment.
• We find peace that surpasses understanding, even in chaos.
• We find comfort in seasons of pain and loss.
• We find confidence when others reject, misunderstand, or judge us.

Because of the joy of God’s salvation and our faith in Christ, we can say with assurance that we can face anything life brings. It is vital that we don’t merely visit this joy, but that we live in it—basking in it, thriving in it, and drawing strength from it day by day.
Today, let this be your prayer:
“Lord, create in me a clean heart. Renew a steadfast spirit within me. Do not cast me away from Your presence, and do not take Your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of Your salvation, and make me willing to obey You. Amen.”

Prayer: It Costs You More Than You Think
In John 13:34–35 (NLT), Jesus gives us a new commandment: to love one another as He has loved us. This isn’t a suggestion or an optional part of our faith; it is the very evidence that we belong to Him. We can loudly declare that we are Christians, faithfully attend church, and say we trust God—but when we refuse to love, to give, or to care, we betray the very command that marks us as His disciples.
Our moments of coldness, selfishness, or indifference may feel small, but spiritually they are costly. Jesus’ picture in Matthew 24 shows that the true sheep are those who understand that love always costs something—time, comfort, resources, pride—and they are willing to pay it. They feed the hungry, give water to the thirsty, visit the sick and imprisoned, because they know the cost of not loving is far greater: separation from God for eternity.
The world says kindness costs nothing. Jesus says it costs everything—and that is exactly why it matters. Choosing not to love may feel easy now, but in the end, it will cost you more than you think.
