Countermeasures: Seeking the Truth
(Devotional on John 8:42–47, NLT)
In John 8:42–47, Jesus stands in Jerusalem—the spiritual capital for Judaism, Islam, and Christianity—and confronts a devastating reality: many who claim to belong to God are actually resisting Him. Jesus tells the crowd, “If God were your Father, you would love me,” but instead, they reject His words and refuse His truth. He exposes the true source of their resistance: the devil, “a murderer from the beginning,” who “has always hated the truth… for he is a liar and the father of lies.”
This devotional, “Countermeasures: Seeking the Truth,” explores how every person is born into a world already under the sway of the enemy—a world saturated with deception from our first breath. As Psalm 51:5–6 reminds us, our brokenness begins at conception, and many of us enter families, cultures, and systems that do not know God, are angry at God, or pass on distorted ideas about Him. Before we can even recognize our parents’ faces, the enemy is already working to shape our beliefs, values, and identities through lies presented as truth.
We see this corruption everywhere: in media, music, entertainment, education, and politics. Yet as followers of Christ, we are called to live differently. In a world ruled by deception, our calling is to seek, love, and stand on the truth of God’s Word. All we need is a little faith. We live in a world that trains us to feel emotionally entitled: if we hurt, we want comfort now; if we struggle, we want relief now; if God has made us a promise, something in us feels entitled to see it now. But Romans 8:24–25 (NLT) tells us, “We were given this hope when we were saved. (If we already have something, we don’t need to hope for it. But if we look forward to something we don’t yet have, we must wait patiently and confidently.)” The heart of God’s promise is that we will spend eternity with Him. When we look back at life without God—when we ran from Him, dismissed Him, or refused to acknowledge Him—we remember how much pain and trouble that brought. But when we finally accepted who God is, what He expects from us, and surrendered to Him, the places of pain began to fill with peace, grace, and a deep sense of satisfaction. Still, we live in the tension between promise and fulfillment. Hebrews 11:1 (NLT) says, “Faith shows the reality of what we hope for; it is the evidence of things we cannot see.” The very definition of faith assumes there will be things we hope for but do not yet see. That gap—between what God promised and what we’re experiencing now—is where the enemy loves to whisper lies, stir our emotions, and push us toward impatience, doubt, and spiritual entitlement.
This is why our faith becomes a countermeasure. The enemy tries to deceive us back onto the wide road that leads to destruction or discourage us so much on the narrow road that we want to quit. When we are waiting on God’s promises, he has plenty of room to attack our minds: “If God really loved you, wouldn’t it have happened by now?” “Maybe you misunderstood.” “Why keep believing?” But from the moment we accepted Christ, God planted promises in us—some general from Scripture, and some personal to our journey. Even if it has been many years and we are still waiting, that does not make God a promise breaker. God is a promise keeper. Our faith counters impatience, discouragement, and emotional entitlement by anchoring us in God’s character, not our timeline. Romans 8:25 says we “must wait patiently and confidently.” Patiently—not resenting God’s timing. Confidently—not in ourselves, but in who God is. Faith is not pretending the delay doesn’t hurt; it is trusting God through the hurt. It is refusing to let the delay define God. So let us not grow weary while we wait. Let us use our faith as a countermeasure against every lie and emotional storm, trusting that the God who saved us will fulfill every promise He has spoken, in His perfect timing and His perfect way.

Countermeasures: Walking in Humility
Built on Proverbs 22:4 and Philippians 3:12–14, this devotional explores humility as a powerful countermeasure against the enemy’s strategy of pride. While the world equates success with money, status, and outward achievement, God defines true riches, honor, and life as flowing from a heart that is humble and rooted in the fear of the Lord.

This devotional, “Countermeasures: Staying Focused,” rooted in Philippians 3:12–14 (especially verse 13), reminds believers that while we have not yet “arrived,” we must intentionally press toward our eternal goal—returning to our Heavenly Father and entering His rest—by refusing to be controlled by our past. The enemy’s strategies against us are aimed at either deceiving us onto the wide road that leads to destruction or destroying us through condemnation, often by using our former sins, regrets, and guilt to make us feel unworthy and distracted from God’s calling. Yet Isaiah 54:4 assures us that in Christ we no longer have to live in shame or disgrace; God has forgiven us, and our past failures, instead of disqualifying us, become our testimony of how He can save and use even “a wretch like us.” Although God’s standard is holiness and the narrow road is difficult because the enemy is relentless, we are not called to perfection but to a life that is purposeful and intentional—getting up each day to strive to please God, to forget what lies behind in the sense of not letting it define us, and to look forward in faith, pressing on toward the heavenly prize for which God has called us in Christ Jesus.

In Matthew 5:17–20 (NLT), Jesus makes a bold declaration: He did not come to abolish the law, but to accomplish its purpose. In Environment of Change: The Law, Part 2, we explore what this means for believers today and how God’s law still shapes our daily walk with Christ.
This devotional breaks down three kinds of law that influence our lives:

• The law of the land – the social contract that governs our communities and carries legal consequences when broken.
• Religious ceremonial laws – practices like church attendance, seasons of fasting, and other expressions of devotion that help us remember and honor God’s work.
• The Law of Moses – God’s moral standard, the “high bar” that reveals His character and shows us what it means to live in a way that pleases Him.

Through His death on the cross, He completed what we could never complete on our own.
