On the twenty first episode of All Heart with Paul Cardall, Paul is joined by guitarist, producer, and songwriter Rich Bishoff. The Utah guitarist is known for his outstanding guitar musicianship, impressive song writing, raw vocals, and a modern sound. Rich shares what it’s like to live in a small town as a professional musician and how he’s been able to build a niche market for himself. At age 13 Rich used his paper route money to buy his first guitar from a Sears catalogue. Both Paul and Rich reflect on their experience serving a two-year full time mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints where missionaries were not able to listen to music except for the The Mormon Tabernacle Choir and a couple other approved recordings. From breaking the mission rules to listen to November Rain by Guns & Roses to coming home and trying to navigate how to build a career as a musician. Discussed is the unique market place in Utah that has a chain of bookstores called Deseret Book that sold music for decades and enabled musicians to distribute and market their music and earn a reasonable income. Rich would become the first call player for Utah events as a guitarist as well as earning income from working cover bands for events. With over 30 years of experience with the guitar he has played in a multitude of bands in Northern Utah including Animation, Brother Sage, The Wind River Band, GearHead, The Moment, Red Shot Pony, Stone Road and Hearts of Steele, Rich talks about his projects teaching guitar lessons, solo performances, and running a recording studio 14.
