Riff Worship

Guitarist Scott Hull made the most his time recording and playing in bands, honing his skills and adopting a format that would lay the groundwork for his next project: Pig Destroyer.

Joining forces with former Enemy Soil members J.R. Hayes and Brian Harvey, the band initially channeled their politically-charged hardcore influences before finding their stride on brutal standouts like Prowler in the Yard and, of course, Terrifyer!

Much like its predecessors, Terrifyer was deliberately abstruse. Pig Destroyer crafted jagged, unpredictable songs, often cutting riffs short before they could settle in. The album itself was written very spontaneously and rehearsed just long enough to capture its chaos in the studio.

After the critical success of their 2003 sophomore album Waking the Fallen, Orange County’s Avenged Sevenfold underwent a period of significant transformation. A new deal with a major label, vocal surgeries, and a bold shift in musical direction all marked a turning point for the band.

Never content to repeat themselves, they forged ahead to create the album they had always envisioned—an ambitious, multi-layered, arena-ready release that propelled them to new heights and solidified their place in modern heavy metal.

Drawing from the darker, more extreme elements of Death, Slayer, and Kreator, New Jersey’s Ripping Corpse set out to break free from the conventions of their death and thrash metal peers.

Though their time together was short-lived, the band was relentless in their pursuit of sonic intensity, honing their craft through constant rehearsals and several demos. Under the guidance of guitarist Shaune Kelley, many of these songs culminated in their sole full-length release, Dreaming with the Dead.

Combining the blistering technicality of death metal with a raw, hardcore attitude, the album was remarkably ahead of its time. Sadly, issues with the band’s label and management halted the band's momentum before they could develop their sound further.

Regardless, Dreaming with the Dead stands as both a powerful statement and precursor of things to come. Several members would later carry the torch in the equally intense Dim Mak. The album also launched the career of guitarist / producer Erik Rutan, who went on to play in Morbid Angel, Hate Eternal, and Cannibal Corpse, and operate his acclaimed studio, Mana Recording.

While Dreaming with the Dead has since established itself as a cult classic of the era, one question will always remain: What could've been?

After years of relentless touring, financial hardship, lineup changes, and violence, Hermosa Beach hardcore pioneers Black Flag finally unleashed their debut full-length Damaged in 1981.

With 20-year-old newcomer Henry Rollins entering the fold, the band delivered genre-defining anthems like “Rise Above” and “Police Story” while also pushing boundaries on the raw, experimental “Damaged I & II.”

Conflicts over the album’s distribution sparked a lawsuit from the label, ultimately delaying the release of their equally influential (and polarizing) follow-up. Nevertheless, Damaged stands as the product of Black Flag’s blood, sweat, and defiance, and remains a towering pillar in punk history!

Between 1989 and 2004, the self-dubbed “hatecore” madmen DAMAGED erupted from the rural town of Ballarat and onto the Australian metal scene, fusing unhinged aggression with the most extreme elements of of black metal, grindcore, and death metal.

With releases like Do Not Spit, Token Remedies Research, and the EP Passive Backseat Demon Engines, DAMAGED unleashed a feral energy that cemented their status as Australia’s premier live metal act of the ’90s. At a time when international bands rarely travelled to Oz’s shores, the band shared the stage with heavyweights like Cannibal Corpse, Morbid Angel, Sepultura, Cradle of Filth, Fear Factory, and many more.

After a decade incensed with internal turmoil, DAMAGED entered the studio in 2000 alongside Brutal Truth frontman Kevin Sharp to record what would become their final album, Purified in Pain.

25 years on, Purified in Pain remains a divisive swan song from a localized, but legendary legacy. This week we are joined by founding member Matt “Skitz” Sanders to unpack the album's story and honor the undefinable chaos, magic, and chemistry it captured.

Following a stretch of interpersonal conflicts and legal setbacks, Seattle’s own TAD were poised to bring their heavy, aggressive sound to the majors.

The arrival of powerhouse drummer Josh Sinder (formerly of The Accüsed) reinvigorated the band, as Tad Doyle, Kurt Danielson, and Gary Thorstensen channeled a blend of punk grit and metal heft into their songwriting.

On their 1993 major label debut Inhaler, TAD delivers a raw, monolithic slab of sound both ugly and unrelenting, while still managing to weave in moments of surprising beauty.

This week we are joined by special guest Tad Doyle to discuss the making of Inhaler, his prolific solo career, operating Witch Ape Studio, as well as his work composing scores for film!
