"Intelligence and Happiness" is a short story that opens with a wager between two rivals: which of them is more valuable to a person's life? To settle the argument, Intelligence enters the mind of Vanek, a farmer's son with no inheritance and no prospects. Armed with sharpened wit, Vanek talks his way into a royal garden — and then into a silent princess's chambers, where he devises a clever riddle to make her speak. But when his honesty puts him on the path to the executioner's block, it is Happiness, not Intelligence, that must save him.
